Trick to downing a punt?

I am a pretty good punter, but need help downing a punt. The ball is in the air, coming down inside the 20. Do I press a button to have the gunner catch the ball or stop it from going into the end zone? I've tried triangle and that does nothing, I've tried standing there and same thing, nothing.

I've been able to do it a few times by going past where the ball will land and holding triangle.

My best results have come when I hold down the Left Trigger(xbox) to strafe that way it automatically faces you towards the ball then hit the Y or Triangle button to catch it if it's in the air, if it's rolling just get in front of of it and the player will stop it.

Hard to do when you're running from under the ball. You have to come around in a circular motion and even then it bounces off the player's head.
