I don't think the article deserves a well thought out response. It's evident the author gave the game about five minutes and gave up. Complaining about a playbook that's too big is ridiculous.

To give my own personal feedback of Madden:

I absolutely love the new layout. You guys have done something unique and it is very deep. Some sort of video tutorial would be beneficial for those who are like the author of this article. I had to cruise through the menu for about a day before I was comfortable where everything was at.

Okay after reading this ill give my two cents .

It seems as if he only played the game a few times and called it quits . He didn't seem interested in trying to advance his level of play he was only interested in loading the game and jumping straight into a game without trying to expand his ability to play the game.

Now on the note of is this game not for casual players ? Yes and no , being a 10+ year madden player this game seems to have a slightly larger learning curve than games in the past . The defensive AI is higher and you have to have the ability to read the defense . Some people hate I personally love the challenge .

While the article isn't very extensive, I want this to be more about the implications of the article, not necessarily the the content.

I personally don't think Madden is too challenging for casual fans but want the hardcore's opinion.

Which makes him a casual gamer himself because that is what most casual gamers want to do, jump straight into the game without trying to learn how to play the game. So it seems he is just upset because he can't jump into the game no longer without actually spending time to learn the game.

I think it's a bit advanced, but for those who really love the sport, you dive into the details because of your passion for the game. Same with any genre.

If you pick up COD, it's hard if you want to just go into a game and shoot stuff. However, if you master the loadout that works best for you, you become an exponentially better player.

A casual gamer can have fun with stuff like Gameflow built in to the game. Maybe throw back in the singular season mode with reduced salary cap stuff. Have trades based on only player attributes, not contracts.

It's not a hard game to pick up and play. Football is basically "move your team down the field by running or passing". The mechanics are simple. Move in the direction you want to run. Throw to the receiver with the corresponding icon.

Exactly , I don't see how what he wrote could be turned any other direction.

Want the hardcore version , most if not all of us here are "sim" players . So speaking on behalf of a lot of players here , we love the challenge .

First I will say that Madden is trying to be too many things to too many people. With only one game representing the NFL you're never going to meet the needs of a large amount of people. This guy doesn't sound like he would have played madden if he hadn't been assigned to.

As it stands newbies can put up a fight in M13 depending on the teams. It takes a few games to get the controls down but that's expected with any videogame with depth. He is probably more comfertable playing a game like Mass Effect (which took me a few hours to learn the controls).

At our Madden day party newbies played just fine and there were even some upsets because they didn't user catch and they used defensive assist.

If anything I think Madden goes too far in trying to cater to casual fans.

How many games besides super mario bro's can you just jump into without some learning curve? Even games like Rayman Origins takes time to learn all it's controls, etc.

Learning all the features of Madden 13, and just playing the game are completely different things. That's why almost everything can be turned off in these sports games. Casual gamers can just pick it up and play, but if you expect to learn all the controls you are no longer just casual gaming. Shoot, just take your hand off the controller and the CPU will control your player for you!

Madden has always catered to the casual fan. With options like "gameflow" and new this year, "ballhawk", how can it not be. It would be interesting to see how well Madden would stack up if they had a sim style title that rivaled it. We see how the NBA live (casual game) did against NBA 2k (sim style game).

I think eventually, the casual fan grows up to become a sim style fan. I know when I was a kid, I loved arcade, style gameplay. Now that i'm older, I cant stand it.

But the game's greatest strength is also its greatest weakness. There is so much to absorb that it's almost overwhelming.
What worries me most about that statement from the article is how will EA react to that statement? We've been complaining about it not being realistic enough, about wanting more depth and you read a commercial article like this...does this make EA dumb down Madden even further leaving us true football sim players (both player and coach yeah, I remembered this time) in the dark? in space, no one can hear you scream

I truly am worried but I always have HC09 to go back to even though I was really excited about the potential of the Madden franchise from this point forward

Yup ! When I was little ( I can't be the only one ) I use to love creating a 99 overall QB etc and destroying the CPU now I find it appalling to even do something like that .

im just that, a casual football fan and i havent played any football video game in ages before and yes i gotta say it isnt easy to pick up. of course if you use the gameflow feature, and just follow the gameplan its pretty simple, the concept of throwing the ball to an open reciever or running the ball is easy understandable, its more a learning by doing thing. but it takes away like 50% of the game if that is all you do (probably only ok for the super casual fan). but then again getting an understanding of play calling is much more difficult and youll have to spend hours reading guides, watching toturials and searching for help in forums. you wont have to do this for games like nhl and fifa and you can still be a pretty damn good player, different story with madden. but thats how football is, its based on playcalling, in my opinion that is the beauty of madden. wouldnt know how to change it and didnt want either.
                            Spending time with Jesus!

Re: What do you think? Madden NFL 13 - Not for the casual fan?

I think this game is for the casual fan. If he didn't want to go through all the plays he has the option of going with gameflow which is apparently the mode EA wants you to use since when you put it on conventional it doesn't save and you're stuck switching it every time. And that fool could've went Madden 101 and just asked John himself!

I don't think this game is for the hardcore fan. The defense doesn't even disguise coverages. The secondary moves as a single unit. So you can disguise and fake a blitz but it's always so obvious.

The playbook has been the same for years so even the kid who picks up madden once every two years is constantly going to be familiar with the play calling.

This years Madden is just pass and catch in my opinion. I don't feel like the writer was at all interested in even giving the game a shot. Pretty sure the manual is under options even when playing a game but for the most part controls have always been the same, and the layout of the buttons is pretty typical for a sports game. (If you have any familiarity of games you can almost predict what buttons would do what, just my opinion)

The only thing I could say isn't for the casual fan is the hub (is that what its called?) when doing defensive alignments / assignments. I honestly think some of those things are too many screens deep.

CCM is ok, even for the casual fan. I feel like there are too many screens and it could be cleaned up a little better.
