I'm an extremely casual Madden guy. I really don't know how to read offenses or know the difference between a 4-3 and Nickel defense. Is this game worth my playing time? Is it any good, given the harsh critiques I've read?

I only payed 40 bux for it so the damage is minimal.

depends on how you plan on playing the game. it would be tough if you try hopping straight into online ranked games with the lack of knowledge you say you have. but offine CCM you'll be totally fine.

I know the difference between the two and I still just let madden pick my plays anyways. makes the game go by much faster not sitting in a screen scrolling through formations. or use gameflow which I believe is on by default.
