    What is a QB Spy?

There are some defense plays named "QB Spy".

What is it supposed to do?

    Thanks!

A QB Spy play is one in which one or more of the defenders follow the QB in an attempt to stop him from running or stop him when he runs.

Always useful when playing teams like the Falcons and Eagles with mobile QBs.

The QB Spy also helps defend against outside runs and even wide receivers coming over the middle.

the question i have is how is the qb spy different from the qb contain? they seem to do the exact same thing to me. What are the differences and when would you use one over the other?

In the QB spy, you designate a player (either LB or DB usually) to watch the quarterback from beyond the line of scrimmage. A QB contain usually involves the Defensive ends or LB's going wide (outside the tackles) to keep the quarterback from getting to the outside. Both can be effective, however, the contain does leave some pretty large passing (and some running) lanes between the guard and tackles.

If I were going against Vick or McNabb I'd probably use more the spy. Obviously you'll want a quicker player to be the spy. If I were going up against McNair or someone similar, I'd probably use the contain. Chances are a LB can run down McNair if he decideds to head up the middle.
