The Odyssey - NHL 22 Player Franchise

Travis LeBlanc, F, Rimouski Oceanic | NHL Draft Scouting Report
    Stacey Roberts – NHL Network

Despite the 2022 NHL Draft top ranking seeming to be a two-headed race between Slovak power forward Juraj Slafkovsky out of HC Kosice and Canadian playmaker Shane Wright from the Ontario Hockey League’s Kingston Frontenacs, there is no dismissing the potential that Rimouski Oceanic (QMJHL) forward Travis LeBlanc may end up being the best of them all. Missing the bulk of the past season with a lower-body injury hurt his stock, but a dynamic performance in the playoffs leading the Oceanic to a Memorial Cup championship has his name buzzing once again.

    Travis LeBlanc’s NHL draft profile

“This kid is going to give Connor McDavid a run for his money for the fastest player in the league one day. You can take that to the bank and cash it.” - NHL anonymous scout

The interesting part is that teams seemingly have to draft Travis LeBlanc off of his age-16 season in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, his performance at the World Junior Hockey Championships that season, and then his triumphant return from a torn meniscus this past season as he led the Oceanic to a Memorial Cup championship this past season over the dominant Oshawa Generals.

It seems as though it is a foregone conclusion that the Montreal Canadiens, selecting first in the upcoming draft, will be picking between Shane Wright (the wonderkid that, despite scoring 32 goals and 94 points in 63 games, sort of underperformed this past season) and Juraj Slafkovsky (a 230-pound brute who has been playing with men the last few years and hasn’t looked out of place whatsoever). With the injury that ravaged most of his draft season, LeBlanc has evidently dropped from his consensus top-ten draft position.

The biggest sample size was an undersized LeBlanc debuting for the Oceanic two seasons ago as a 16-year phenom out of Gatineau, QC. He was skilled and much quicker than everyone else on the ice but had not quite hollowed out his game in its entirety yet. However, despite his defensive and limited physical capabilities, his offensive game was immediately represented by productivity, scoring 41 goals and 97 points (the second-most points in the last 16 years behind Halifax Mooseheads’ star Nikolaj Ehlers’s 104 in the 2013-14 season.

He made his way over to Team Canada as a bottom-six forward at the 2021 World Junior Championships, finishing with a Silver medal after losing to Team USA after the Canadians went undefeated throughout the Round Robin. He managed to muster up two goals and three assists in a supporting role as a 16-year-old.

The following season was seemingly over before it got off the ground after LeBlanc suffered a torn meniscus during the summer training not long after returning home from Rimouski. He would return later in the season to aid in the Oceanic’s playoff push and returned in the second round. He would pour it on, scoring 5 goals and 10 points in the seven games he played, being named the Memorial Cup’s most valuable player as the Oceanic ousted the number one Oshawa Generals.

    Travis LeBlanc’s Skills and Assets

The first thing to note about Travis LeBlanc’s skill set that he put on display on the Rimouski Oceanic’s run to the Memorial Cup championship is that he is leagues above everyone else when it comes to his speed and skating ability. His fluid strides and incredible agility has him league-bound right away. Analysts credit his incredible lower-body strength (similar to Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby) for his ability to shield the puck away from defenders but it is his breakaway speed and ability to immediately burst away from defenders to find open space.

“I grew quicker than others when I was younger,” commented LeBlanc during one of his pre-draft interviews. “So, I knew that if I worked on my strides, I could take my long legs and put them to my advantage. I definitely watched film on guys like Sergei Fedorov and Ilya Kovalchuk, who are just masters of gathering speed for [taller] guys”.

LeBlanc’s stick work is also exceptional, though one wouldn’t say he is exactly a virtuoso at it. He manages the puck down low in the corners exceptionally well with body positionally but can work the puck around with his stick well. He sees the ice with the eyes of a playmaker and is able to make jaw-dropping passes. This past season, wingers Adam Raksa and Zachary Bolduc both immensely benefitted from being slotted on either side of him.

That is not to forget that LeBlanc possesses an incredibly shot as he has grown (and is continuing to grow) into his adult body. Though he hasn’t added a blistering one-timer to his shot quite yet due to how he has been used, his snapshot is second-to-none and his accuracy has steadily increased with time.

Not the most physically imposing, LeBlanc has nerves of steel and is willing to shoot into the corners with the biggest of defensemen as he begins to realize he will no longer bounce off other players like before he grew.

    Travis LeBlanc’s Areas of Improvement

Though his offensive game has always been astute, LeBlanc has the superstar’s tendency of sometimes attempting to do too much. As a playmaker, he sometimes tries to make one extra pass which leads to turnovers as his linemates think the game much slower than he does. This shouldn’t be too much of an issue in the much more system-oriented NHL but this is something that needs to be worked out of his game.

Since growing up, LeBlanc also sometimes over-emphasizes the physical aspects of his game and will sometime grow overaggressive, leading to some unfortunate penalties. Though one would think he will mature as his game continues to grow, NHL teams have been proven to grow weary by over-rambunctious teenagers who put the team at a disadvantage in key moments of the game.

Defensively, LeBlanc is mediocre at best. His positioning continues to need work as his speed sometimes grows to his disadvantage. Of this, he will often overskate out of defensive positioning and leave gaps in the defensive zone. This is something that he certainly cleaned up a bit in the playoffs for the Oceanic but still needs a decent amount of work. This is often a sticking point for NHL teams who want to keep their younger players - evaluating whether or not they can play defense at that level.

As a center, it was prudent that he displays better judgment on defense and better positioning in the defensive zone. His faceoff skills aren’t his best skills, but some work with a veteran will help him pick it up quickly if he emphasizes working on it, which he has been vocal about being willing to do. He could also develop as a winger if the need is there.

    Draft Outlook

As previously mentioned, LeBlanc’s case of joining the Montreal Canadiens as the number one pick died when was tore his meniscus the previous summer. Though his impressive recovery to form and excellent performance in the playoffs put his name back out there, his draft stock still has not completely recovered due to the lack of a sample size.

When it comes to sheer physicality, LeBlanc seems only rivaled by consensus top pick Juraj Slafkovsky as the two most NHL-ready prospects in the draft. What hurts the former Oceanic star is the fact that his slightly slim frame has proven him a little injury prone and losing most of his draft season in the Q devastated his stock and only reinforced his negatives.

If he pans out, we’re looking at a faster Ilya Kovalchuk and a potential perennial 50-goal scorer in the league, he’s that quick and dynamic on offense. If he doesn’t, he would certainly be able to shore up any team’s bottom six based solely on his speed and offensive creativity.

Senators trade back into 1st round, select winger Travis LeBlanc
Roy Alderson – The Ottawa Citizen

As soon as the Montreal Canadiens officially made Slovak forward Juraj Slafkovsky the first overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, the expectation had to be that the New Jersey Devils would select center Shane Wright with the second overall pick, correct?

Well, you couldn’t be more off.

For the first time since Russian forwards Alexander Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin went first and second overall to the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins, respectively - two players from the same European nation went in the first two picks, as the Devils selected Slovak defenseman Simon Nemec.

The fall of Shane Wright to the fourth overall draft pick (seeing even U.S. center Logan Cooley leap past him to the third draft pick by the Arizona Coyotes) was astonishing. Seeing Wright eyeing down the Canadiens’ camp after he was picked fourth overall by the Seattle Kraken had news outlets stirring for the dramatics.

The draft was all thrown off, with the Philadelphia Flyers picking up Cutter Gauthier out of the US development program and Czech defenseman David Jiricek going sixth overall to the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Ottawa Senators seized the opportunity of “can’t miss” prospects dropping down the board in favor of certain team’s favorite players by deciding to make a shrewd move.

General Manager Pierre Dorion traded the Senators’ seventh-overall pick to the Chicago Blackhawks in the blockbuster Alex DeBrincat deal, citing the team’s already vast pool of prospects - including the likes of recent picks such as forwards Tyler Boucher, Shane Pinto, and Parker Kelly, as well as defensemen such as Jacob Bernard-Docker and Jake Sanderson.

However, the team traded back into the draft, sending a future second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft and a fourth-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft to the Nashville Predators for their 15th overall pick. With said pick, the team announced that they were selecting reigning Memorial Cup MVP and Rimouski Oceanic winger Travis LeBlanc.

LeBlanc, 18, was battling back from a torn meniscus he suffered during training the previous summer, stunning the league after returning for the playoffs and leading the Oceanic to their first Memorial Cup tournament appearance since the days of Sidney Crosby back in the early 2000s. LeBlanc scored 10 points in the tournament on his way to not only a championship but an MVP trophy.

“It feels surreal to get the opportunity to hear my name called,” commented the emotional LeBlanc, donned in the Senators’ red, black, and white vintage jersey. “There were certainly times throughout the last year that I truly did not think this was going to be in the cards for me. This is definitely special - a real dream come true.”

LeBlanc, at 6’2”, joins a youthful Senators’ prospect pool that continues to trend upwards. After the successful rookie season from former first-round draft pick Tim Stutzle last year, the Senators continue to integrate new, young talent into their ranks. The team heavily expects University of North Dakota trio Shane Pinto, Jacob Bernard-Docker, and Jake Sanderson to join the main roster out of training camp in this upcoming season.

The former Oceanic is viewed as one of the most physically gifted players in this draft pool, having already grown into a mature player. His speed is rivaled by few and his scoring touch replicates the likes of former snipers such as Ilya Kovalchuk, Marian Gaborik, and even legend Brett Hull. Though he has a lot of growing to do, many expect LeBlanc to not only get a training camp invite but to make noise for the offensively-incompetent team.

“I have no expectations right now, I’m still feeling things out. But, the dream of being in the NHL isn’t realized when you get drafted. I still have a ton of work to do and a ton of things to prepare for.”

As the Ottawa Senators continue to gear up for an interesting season with no lack of storylines, one of the unexpected ones certainly has to be the prominent arrival of first-round pick from this year’s draft, Travis LeBlanc. Despite the expectation that the Senators will carry a few rookies in forward Shane Pinto and defensive duo Jake Sanderson and Jacob Bernard-Docker, it seems as though there is a good chance that a fourth rookie will join them.

Formerly of the Rimouski Oceanic out of the QMJHL, LeBlanc was expected to put on a decent display and leave training camp for another year of development back in the Major Juniors. However, LeBlanc showed up to camp as one of the most physically talented players on the ice; not just out of all the rookies, but the entire team.

“I had heard that he was a quick skater, but holy, this guy can absolutely fly” commented team captain Brady Tkachuk, who showed up to camp even more physically imposing than he left it after his breakout 2021-22 season where he scored 30 goals and 67 points after signing a seven-year, $57 million contract with the team. “I had heard of him and definitely watched him dominate a little bit of the Junior playoffs with some of the guys on the team that knew him. But, he’s special. He’s making some guys look silly out there.”

Tkachuk is seemingly pointing at a play during one of the full scrimmages the team has been mixing in, where LeBlanc dashed up the left side of the rink after receiving a pass from Parker Kelly and slammed on the breaks before abruptly breaking into the middle - leaving veteran defenseman Nikita Zaitsev tumbling to the ice. A quick backhand pass across the ice had fellow rookie Pinto burying the puck past goaltender Anton Forsberg.

“He’s definitely impressed and shook up our expectations,” commented head coach D.J. Smith, who has been singing the 18-year-old’s praises since drafting him 15th overall after trading back into the first round of the past draft. “We’re going to qualm our expectations with him, but he’s not making it very easy to send him back to Rimouski, I’ll tell you that much.”

If LeBlanc is nervous at all about potentially not making the team, he certainly isn’t showing it. “I’m confident and I think I’m playing some of the best hockey I’ve ever played,” commented LeBlanc, who has been spending a lot of his time with Senatots’ mainstays in Drake Batherson, Tim Stutzle, and Josh Norris. “I loved my time in Rimouski and I feel like I gained as much as I could from that level. I’m here to make a role for myself here in Ottawa.”

The Senators have been fairly quiet on how they will be dressing for their five pre-season games, but the expectation is that - considering the roster is so young and requires chemistry and time together to grow - that most of the roster will be playing in more than one game. Younger players such as LeBlanc, Pinto, Sanderson, and Bernard-Docker will be seeing the bulk of the time.

“They have all been impressive and proven they can play at this level - that much has never been in doubt,” commented Coach Smith. “It’s about filling in holes for players who will excel in these roles and making sure we’re not stunting anyone’s growth by putting them in roles where they aren’t meant. There are only so many roles to go around.”

The Senators will start their pre-season against last year’s first-overall pick defenseman Owen Power and the Buffalo Sabres.

After a successful training camp period that saw the Ottawa Senators escape the pre-season with a record of five wins and only one loss, they have announced their final cuts and their opening night roster that they will feature in their season opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The most interesting aspect of their roster is the featuring of 18-year-old first-round pick Travis LeBlanc as a member of the team. LeBlanc was featured prominently during the pre-season games and played with an eye-popping amount of talent. His speed translated well from the QMJHL where he starred for the Rimouski Oceanic and he has found a strong sense of chemistry on the second line with forwards Tim Stutzle and winger Drake Batherson.

Another interesting tidbit is the retention of forward Alex Formenton; featured on the third line flanking center Josh Norris and joined by Mathieu Joseph

Formenton is also an interesting retention on the team for a much different reason than LeBlanc. Formenton was a member of the scandal-filled 2018 Team Canada at the World Junior Championships and while everything is being investigated, his contract has yet to be extended past its expiry date. Formenton was widely considered to be exploring his European options while the NHL figures out what to do with these players.

New forward additions in Claude Giroux (now adorned with the assistant captain's A) and Alex DeBrincat (acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks in the consistent dismantling of their former core) will link up with team captain Brady Tkachuk on the first line.

Falling to the fourth forward line is an assortment of penalty killers in Logan Shaw and Austin Watson while being centered by rookie Shane Pinto.

On the defensive side, it is a bit of continuity and new additions with Thomas Chabot leading the way with Travis Hamonic while rookie Jake Sanderson slides next to the hard-hitting Artem Zub. Jacob Bernard-Docker and Erik Brannstrom, trying to keep around on the main squad as a full-time pro, slide into the third line. Nikita Zaitsev, a disgruntled defenseman, slides as a healthy scratch and is expected to draw into the lineup down the stretch.

Cam Talbot and Anton Forsberg will swap games while an official starting goaltender as yet to be named by head coach D.J. Smith.

Ahead of NHL debut, rookie Travis LeBlanc reflects
Rory Armstrong - The Ottawa Citizen

OTTAWA, ON - For the youngest member of the 2022-23 Ottawa Senators, their season debut against arch-rival Toronto Maple Leafs will bring a sense of relief for winger Travis LeBlanc. The ability to finally simply play in the National Hockey League and establish his career will end the tumultuous era of his life of whether or not he will be able to hack it in the pros.

LeBlanc is one of the few 2022 NHL Draft members that managed to stick with his pro squad to start the season. The heavy expectation is first overall pick, Juraj Slavkovsky of the Montreal Canadiens will be up and down between the NHL and the Canadiens' American Hockey League affiliate, the Laval Rocket, to add some seasoning to his game. Shane Wright, a member of the Seattle Kraken, made the opening night roster but is already a healthy scratch and expected to make his way back to the Ontario Hockey League.

LeBlanc's majority - both on and off the ice - is often cited as why he was given a prominent role with the youthful Senators' forwards core.

"He's a solid skater," commented head coach DJ Smith, entering a pivotal year for both himself and his team as they are both expected to make a significant leap. "He's physically able to hang with the guys in this league and mentally, we think we have a good core of guys around him to help the transition."

Despite original rumors that LeBlanc would only be given a ten-game tryout with the team before the first year of his entry-level contract would kick in, both Coach Smith and general manager Pierre Dorion have been adamant that LeBlanc would be with the team for the whole year.

"Leaving his status with the team in limbo like that would put unnecessary pressure on the kid that he simply does not need," commented Dorion in his start-of-the-season press conference. "He has a role on this team and it is a prominent role at that."

The 18-year-old product from the Rimouski Oceanic has been slotted on the second line with second-year center Tim Stutzle and Drake Batherson - two prominent young forwards looking to make a significant jump into stardom. These three will supplant the top line of captain Brady Tkachuk and new acquisitions Claude Giroux and Alex DeBrincat.

"I'm just excited to get started so we can get the jitters of the first game out of the way. Right now, it is going to be a great experience for myself and my family, but after that, it is our job to represent the city of Ottawa as best as we can. Our fans deserve a good hockey team." commented LeBlanc after his most recent practice.

The Ottawa Senators will face off against reigning Hart Trophy winner Auston Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs in their home-and-home series to open the season.

Tkachuk’s overtime marker leads Sens past Maple Leafs in opener

OTTAWA, ON - If there is anything that the Ottawa Senators’ faithful can take from their season and home opener - it's that the team certainly has a lot of fight in them.

After responding to an early, first-period deficit with goals from forwards Mathieu Joseph and Shane Pinto, the Senators allowed the Maple Leafs to creep back into the first 2022-23 installment of the rivalry thanks to poor discipline. Two power-play goals from Leafs’ ace Mitchell Marner bracketed a goal from Drake Batherson to tie things up heading to overtime.

The team was able to limit reigning Hart Trophy winner Auston Matthews to a single assist in the contest and also received the first two NHL points from 18-year-old winger Travis LeBlanc in his first NHL game. His secondary assist was to the overtime winner - a slap shot from the blueline from Senators’ captain Brady Tkachuk to send the team to their first victory of the year.

Senators goalie Cam Talbot and his 32 saves was able to outduel Maple Leafs goaltender Ilya Samsonov and his 31 saves. It’s worth noting that Samsonov was drawn into the game over Matt Murray, the former Senators who was traded this past summer.

The team will head south five hours down the 401 highway to place the Toronto Maple Leafs in Toronto, ON.
