    2023 BCS Rankings

    Hello, college football enthusiasts!

As I have done the previous two seasons, I will be calculating college football ratings for the current 2023 season using the BCS (Bowl Championship Series) formula from the 2013 season. The BCS formula was the backbone of college football rankings for years, incorporating various elements such as human polls, computer rankings, and strength of schedule to determine the top teams.

As of now, we only have access to five of the original six computer rankings, which were an essential part of the BCS algorithm. Consequently, I will adjust the methodology slightly by excluding the highest computer ranking alone instead of the highest and lowest to accommodate this limitation. This adjustment ensures we can approximate the original BCS approach while making the most of the available data.

Once the Anderson ratings become available (usually at the end of October/first of November), the methodology will revert to removing the highest and lowest computer rankings.

Feel free to engage, ask questions, and share your insights as we navigate the rest of the college football season.

Guessing it doesn't affect the rankings and is just a clerical error but ND is 5-2, not 6-1

Hey original poster. Do you mind if I post my computer poll here? Not trying to hijack your glory and your amazing work.

          Yes, just a clerical error.

We are both wrong...they are 6-2. I have updated the image.

I wouldn't say amazing work. I'm just taking other people's work and applying it like it would've been ten years ago.

Wow, it's been ten years since the BCS.

          Post away.

                  Re: 2023 BCS Rankings

Ohio State is the consensus number-one team between the CFP and the BCS. While Georgia is #1 in both polls, the BCS computer average has Ohio State as the unanimous #1 team, and the committee agrees with this assessment. The BCS computers absolutely despise Georgia, whose computer average (0.7700) ranks 7th!!! behind Ohio State (1.000), Michigan (0.9200), Florida State (0.9000), Washington (0.8500), Alabama (0.8100), and Texas (0.7800).

Every year of the CFP, the BCS would've picked the same four teams, and as of now, this year is no exception.

                  Other Notes

                  - The committee was not as hard on Oregon State as the BCS was after their loss to Arizona.
                  - The committee has no love for the Air Force or James Madison, for that matter. James Madison makes sense because of the bowl ban (that's a whole other discussion that everyone disagrees with the NCAA on. Postseason bans for moving UP a division are stupid).
                  - The BCS and the committee agree on 23 of the 25 teams. Kansas State ranks #26 in the BCS, while Oklahoma State clocks in at #28. Liberty Biberty didn't make the CFP Top 25 as well as James Madison.

BCS and CFP agree on the top five and agree on the top 11 teams, with some minor disagreements on ranking between Oregon/Alabama and Ole Miss/Penn State. Georgia's victory over Missouri raised their computer average enough to jump Michigan in the rankings.

The CFP was far harder than the BCS on Oklahoma after their loss in Bedlam, while the BCS loved Utah's blowout victory over Arizona State while the CFP was like meh.

It's STILL dumb that James Madison isn't eligible for postseason play, while the CFP still doesn't like Liberty Biberty. Taking their places in the CFP Top 25 are Arizona (#28 BCS) and Kansas State (#27 BCS).

I feel like a failure. I've worked a lot of OT this week and just realized that while I had run the numbers...I never posted.

So here's the late Week 11 BCS.

Win over #2 in the country should be enough to move to #1 for Michigan, let's see what the computer says.
