Microsoft looks ready to launch Windows 11

Microsoft has been teasing a “next generation” of Windows for months now, but new hints suggest the company isn’t just preparing an update to its existing Windows 10 software, but a new, numbered version of the operating system: Windows 11.

The software giant announced a new Windows event for June 24th yesterday, promising to show “what’s next for Windows.” The event invite included an image of what looks like a new Windows logo, with light shining through the window in only two vertical bars, creating an outline that looks very much like the number 11. Microsoft followed up with an animated version of this image, making it clear the company intentionally ignored the horizontal bars.

Microsoft’s Windows event also starts at 11AM ET, not the usual start time for typical Windows and Surface events. Following the event invite, Microsoft exec Yusuf Mehdi said he hasn’t “been this excited for a new version of Windows since Windows 95!” It’s the first time we’ve heard Microsoft specifically mention a “new version” of Windows is on the way.

The event invite also comes just a week after Nadella teased a “next generation of Windows” announcement. Nadella promised that Microsoft would soon share “one of the most significant updates to Windows of the past decade.” Microsoft’s chief product officer, Panos Panay, also teased a “next generation” of Windows earlier this year.

If Microsoft is truly readying to move beyond Windows 10 and towards Windows 11, we’re expecting to see big visual changes to reflect that. Microsoft has been working on something codenamed Sun Valley, which the company has referred to as a “sweeping visual rejuvenation of Windows.”

6 years since a new OS release.

I think they are just going to start renaming their major patches and give them visual updates to differentiate.

a new OS in 6 years in I say is highly unlikely. Too many organizations have just completed their switch from 7 to 10 in the past few years, and I doubt they are ready to do this again so soon.

Doesn't even feel like 10 came out so long ago.

If not for needing a new laptop, I would've stuck with Windows 7, but new ones coming with windows 10 forced me to switch.

Hopefully 11 ends up decent. Seems like every other one hasn't been great.

      Windows 98 good

      Windows 2000/ME not good

      Windows XP great

      Windows Vista not good

      Windows 7 great

      Windows 8 not good

      Windows 10 good

      Windows 11....?

10 has been smooth for me for the most part. I'd prefer something minimalist instead of having to gut most of the OS.

I thought I read a year or two ago that they weren't going to do a new OS for a long, long time.

I just hope it doesn't look like anything that Apple does.

XP was great. TBH I haven't had any issues/crashed with 10. I don't need anything fancy what I have now works for me.

I haven't had issues with 10 either, I just liked 7 more because I didn't like how app filled windows 10 was, and interface was different, while 7 was more similar to XP. Even on the control panels, I still prefer classic view. I dont want hardware and sound, or network and settings or whatever they're called. Show me speaker, keyboard, printer and all those icons directly on the control panel screen.

But XP was the biggest jump for me. First OS I ever used was windows 98. But once getting XP, it felt so cool. The built in games that came with it, that clipboard helper thing on Word, the different backgrojnds, and other stuff seemed so cool back then.

Any Windows 3.1 guys here? Showing my age with that one.

I really liked 10, rarely crashed and has been very reliable lately.

I’m not sure what I want in a upgrade though.

On my 6 year old POS $300 laptop I might switch it to Ubuntu or something like that. Even with maintenance it just gets slower and slower. Literally all I do on it is meal prep and occasionally plug into the TV to stream something that I can only do through a browser.

Latest update to Windows 10, some news and weather icon on your taskbar.

Its automatically added there, your default browser has been changed to Microsoft Edge (which is impossible to delete from your computer), and seems like even if you get rid of the taskbar, it can still reappear.

Things like that, and bloatware on phones that you cant uninstall, how are they even legal?

Anything to look more like Apple, I guess. And another reason to hate Apple because of its influence over the rest of the tech world, sometimes for worse.

New reports saying various things like Skype (replaced by Microsoft Teams), Internet Explorer, Paint 3D (but not regular paint), Cortana among other things won't be present for Windows 11.

                            That's good I guess

Although all these things they've announced for Windows 11, I'm not sure if there's really many pros or cons to upgrade. Just feels like a different looking OS.

I love Apple but you're right. I don't like the new taskbar being in the middle like with the MAC.
