the set up man is kind of like a mini-closer. in fact, a lot of successful set up men end up becoming closers (see houston). in a perfect world, your starter would go 7, the set up guy pitches the 8th, and you bring your closer in for the 9th.

Lidge? Wheeler? I dont think either of those two guys are successful closers.

The set-up man is to the 8th inning what the closer is to the 9th inning. For example, the corpse of Mike Timlin is expected to be the go-to guy in the 8th inning for the Red Sox this year, the guy to bridge the gap from the 7th to when Papelbon can come in for the 9th. I think Mariano Rivera got his late inning wings as a set-up guy for John Wetteland in 1996. The simplest definition is probably that the set-up man is generally the best reliever in the bullpen after the closer.

            Re: SU?

Starters are expected to go seven innings and if the team has the lead then the setup and closer are expected to be able to hold it through the eighth and ninth. That's the basic plan, anyway, although there are variations to it like having a left-handed reliever whose only job is to face left-handed hitters in the late innings. A team with a top notch setup man and closer should win most of the time when their team leads after seven.
