Re: ***Official MLB 2K9 Retail Version Impressions***

Since I don't see a bugs/glitches thread I wanted to see if anyone experienced this in their playing.

3 times so far in this situation the same thing has happened.

CPU in the field:

bases loaded, the infield is in. I hit a ground ball to one of the fielders and he is going for the (_)-2-3 double play; However, when the catcher gets the ball he has yet to actually touch the plate for the first out and automatically throws it to first the second he gets it resulting in only 1 out and a run for me.

Other than that, this game is a hella surprise to me. I reluctantly went out and bought it and so far I've had more realistic games out the box than I did for the first few months of 2k8.

Re: ***Official MLB 2K9 Retail Version Impressions***

Not sure if this has been mentioned before, but here it goes...

Brewers fans, take a look at the numbers for the retro home jerseys in 2K9...they used the same style of numbers on the retro jerseys that are used on the standard home/away jerseys. Looks goofy to say the least.

I am not a Brewer fan (quite the opposite, actually) but live in the heart of Brewer country...so I know many people will not be thrilled about this.

I'm looking forward to playing this game but am mightily cheesed off because 2K has felt the need to region lock the 360 version, even the NTSC-J version which WAS PAL compatibile last year. The logic behind this eludes me, why would you want to prohibit people in PAL regions from buying your game? All this means is I'm now stuck with the more expensive PS3 version, I have my fingers crossed that its at least functional.

probably so you can later sell someone rights to distribute PAL versions. Idk

Re: ***Official MLB 2K9 Retail Version Impressions***

Okay, so Blockbuster came through for me on the rental and I had a chance to play a couple games (Xbox 360).

For those of you that read my rediculously long impressions on the demo (the main one found here:http://www.operationsports.com/forum...post2039221552) I'll just say that my impressions haven't changed much.

Also, for those how want to skip on down to the point...lol...here's your chance. Last couple paragraphs summarize

Here are some thoughts (bear in mind this is all on default with NO slider adjustments...mileage, of course, may vary):

Pickoffs are confirmed to be way to easy on default. For me: 7 Attempts, 7 outs...no exxageration. It's actually quite comical as I wasn't even trying on the last few. There is a slider for this though, so hopefully it works well.

I'm not seeing the fielding issues people keep bringing up. Now, I've only gotten in two full games and parts of two more, so maybe I've been fortunate. The thing people see with the last second adjustments messing your fielder up seems to me like it might be user generated. Meaning that the game auto adjusts your fielder at the last minute. If you press nothing, he'll adapt.

This is something I may just be used to from The Show as it does this as well. I don't particularly like the control being taken from me, but it's worse in this case as there is no trade-off for a smoother animation like in The Show. That said, it's a minor gripe and the fielding has functioned just fine for me...I actually like it overall.

Graphics are VERY hit and miss. The Red Sox alternates look washed out. the Blue road alt. is pretty bad IMO. Plus, logos, numbers, and lettering for almost all teams I've seen are generally too big across the board. this is minor stuff in the overall scheme, but it is noticeable.

Way too easy on default. CPU can't score, I can't stop. The end. Again, this isn't a shocker. It's on "Pro" on default and if you look at the sliders it's heavily slanted towards the user.

Animations are just as jerky and ehh as the demo.

Commentary and camera work will help carry this game for a lot of people. It helps mask some of the disappointments in other areas. Did hear a fair share of commentary quirks (wrong calls, misnamed players/teams, repeated statements, etc.) but that was to be expected and I'm still happy with the commentary overall.

Crowd is good overall in appearance. Not very exciteable (a 2K trademark over the years in baseball) at all.

Gameplay doens't feel much improved to me still. Now, controls are more responsive than 2K8, but when I talk about gameplay, I'm talking how the game plays relative to the sport it represents. Not great, IMO.

Still hold to my disapointment with signature styles overall. It's much more hit and miss, which is a shame because (as I said in the demo review) it's been a strong suit of the game to this point.

CPU doesn't chase as bad as in the demo, IMO. It's still too much, but at least bearable if you're willing to put in the effort.

I was able to draw some walks on default, so I think with adjustments, this aspect will be fine.

Overall, it's about what I expected. Honestly, while not surprised (based on early impressions here, overall) I'm a bit disappointed as it's not the type of game I can really get into more than in passing, I don't think. Unless some of the editing/franchise gripes are helped along, I'll likely take a pass...at least until later when I want a change of pace, perhaps.

To this point, this game isn't bad. So please don't take this as all negative. I'm just a bit more in-depth of a player. For what it is (which, IMHO, is an arcade leaning "pick up and play" type game) it can be fun. Controls are a blast, etc.

Simply put, If you are looking for a solid simulation and immersive baseball experience, you likely may be disappointed. If your looking for a fun, grab a buddy and fire it up kind of experience, you may be quite happy. Didn't check online (I don't play regularly), but I imagine that will be a strong suit too, from what I've heard.

I won't rate it (After all, it's been a couple full games and a smattering...lol) but I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the more casual players really like it. I expect to continue to see very mixed reviews, to be honest.

Again, for the more emotionally invested among us...lol: I 100% acknowledge these are very preliminary "first impressions." I'm certainly not claiming anything definitive at this point.

EDIT: One more thing to add, as it just happened to me again in a game I was playing (only this time there was no recovery). I've had several incidents of a sharp play at the line or in fould territory where the game just locks up. The fielder I made the play with is frozen and everything's stuck.

Every other time, I just went into the pause menu and backed out and it cleared up. This time it stuck. Just something to watch for, I guess.

Re: ***Official MLB 2K9 Retail Version Impressions***

I picked up the PS3 version due to my rrod-prone 360. The PS3 version has noticeably more jaggies. Other than that it plays as smoothly as the 360 demo.

As for the game, I like it. This is the first 2K baseball game I've liked in years. VC is on the right track. I believe the low reviews we've seen so far are a bit off. Definitely a 7 or 7.5 for me, maybe better.

I don't mean to sound like an idiot or anything, but what exactly is a Cool Base uniform, and why is it differant from the other uniforms? With the Pirates, the Cool Base uniforms look exactly like their alternate home uniform, so what's the differance?

Re: ***Official MLB 2K9 Retail Version Impressions***

Well I got my game earlier and decided to play with my Twins vs. the A's. It was just basically a game to get a feel for it and I didn't really look into anything.

I just now decided that I would play what I will say is my first official game. What I did was start a franchise with the Nationals to get used to franchise mode and the gameplay. For my dynasty I am using Bigfnjoe's spring training sliders. They worked pretty well in my first game.

After the game I could not believe how much fun I had playing it. The final was 4-3 Phillies as they got three 9th inning runs of Joel Hanrahan to take the 4-3 lead. I started Scott Olsen and he gave up like ten hits or so but I got out of a couple jams. As for my hitting it was spectacular. I drew like three walks two of which were back to back and one of those was a four pitch walk.

It just felt good because I worked the count and waited for my pitch. Adam Dunn was awesome in the game as he had two of my three RBI's. Zimmerman was also great as he set the table for Dunn. The most memorable at bat I had was with Zimmerman actually. Brett Myers pitched me outside three times in a row and gave me a count of 2-1. I took all three of those pitches. So I figured he was gonna try and hit the outside corner again on the next pitch. So I aimed the left stick to the right to hit it towards RF and it worked like a charm. I got a double right down the line with Zimmerman which in the next at bat Dunn would triple off the wall. It was so sweet because I adjusted my hitting to where the pitcher was going.

Honestly there were only two things that bothered me in the game. The first was obviously the fact the CPU doesn't take hardly any pitches. It is really annoying but the good thing was I was still pitching about three pitches per at bat because the CPU hitters swung and missed and also they fouled some pitches off.

The second thing that was frustrating was rundowns. The CPU doesn't run the runner down. It is so ridiculous to watch. I don't know how such a vital part to Baseball can be screwed up like that. I thought for sure rundowns would be fixed in the final version as it was easily noticable in the demo.

The commentary and presentation is fantastic. I felt like I was actually watching ESPN. Thorne and Phillips sound flat out amazing together. I'm sure eventually it will get repetitive but not nearly half as much as Miller and Morgan were last year.

Overall I had a great first game with 2k9. I am going to try and not read threads on this site that have to do with problems with the game. It will just irritate me if I find out from others. I would rather find them for myself than learn about them early and have something like that ruin the game.

I did find another glitch however. I tried doing a fantasy draft and I chose my MLB team and then simmed the rest. Once it got to the 98th round my game froze. I tried again and this time it worked but my team somehow had the top three pitchers in the game and some of the best hitters in the game on it. I had budgets on and everything. So I decided to try it again and once again it froze but this time in the 99th round. Hopefully this can get fixed in a patch along with the CPU swinging at every pitch.

I have to say I had my doubts with this game going into today because of all the negative threads. Once I played it I found out it is a terrific baseball game thus far. I am very happy with my purchase so far. Hopefully a few of the big flaws with the game can be fixed.
