Re: Official MLB 2K10 Impressions (360/PS3)

I was playing against Ichiro the other night and the way he bails out of the box after swings is cool to see done well. I was also playing the Yankees last night (just a couple innings of an exhibition) and Thames chased two bad pitches in the same at bat out of the zone to strikeout. Good old all-or-nothing Marcus!

Some of the in-game stats and related commentary just blows me away sometimes.

I know the gameplay has a few niggles (nothing game-killing for me; I'm still having a blast!), but kudos to 2K for the stellar presentation.

EA, you listenin'?

Well, I agree the presentation is top-notch, but like so many other things in ANY sports game ... it gets repetitive and it's glitchy.

A glitch that I don't think anyone is talking about is the post-All-Star game MLB Today overlays. For example, your first game back from the break, until you've played or simed 31 games, stats "over the last 30 days" will feature teams with 0.00 ERAs, teams with 0 homer runs, teams with 0 runs scored, etc.

It's by no means a game-killing glitch, but it's there.

As I mentioned, there's also too much repetition. They seem to ignore individual pitching stats, save for when the starting pitcher is warming up.

Re: Official MLB 2K10 Impressions (360/PS3)

I believe presentation is generally quite good, but I don't know if its "top-notch." Stat overlays are only half the experience, and when you don't have pre and post-pitch batting/pitching rituals, no viewable mound visits by the CPU, no celebrations from teammates at home base after a multi-run HR, etc, it really takes away from that potential "top-notch" experience.

It appears VC cut out a lot of what made their "real-time presentation" last year so great, and made us so hopeful of what they'd be able to ADD in future iterations. Unfortunately, that has not been the case, and I'm hoping the next patch can address these issues.

I'm starting to believe the developers really cut some visual/presentation corners just to get the game to run 60 fps (lower quality crowd, generic player models on field during defense, reduced presentation elements, etc.). If that's the case, I think they would have been better off making this game a stable 30 fps and adding all the graphic/presentation fidelity back to the game.

Here's a few things that could be fixed:

1. Running to 1st base all runners turn the wrong way. They break towards second which if tagged they would be out.

2. All fielder arms are way too strong. This has been mentioned about 1,000 times.

3. I can't figure out how to make my infielders dive. I'm playing the PC version with a wireless Logitech gamepad - I have button 1 mapped but no dive.

4. CPU pitchers are left in way too long. I've played games where the starters have thrown over 110 pitches. I even have the sliders toned down. Plus the computer needs to swap pitchers on mtach ups - lefty on left hanxed hotter etc.

5. Relay throws by the CPU are constantly cutoff - this would be fine if the infielder is just off the infield grass but the game cuts off the throw when the fielder is 30' from home. WTF?

I like the game though. Keep improving the game. In a couple of years this game will be awesome.

Re: Official MLB 2K10 Impressions (360/PS3)

I think this is one of the worst games I've ever played. I do like the batter/pitcher interface - it's fine. But there are a number of things that bother me, and they range from mildly annoying to catastrophic problems. I won't even go through them all because I'm sure they've been listed in this 83-page thread.. lol

some of the problems make me think these guys don't even know baseball to some extent... Like runners remaining in fair territory while running down the line on a single. To lineouts being called "fly outs." How come fielders completely ignore runners on the base paths when they could tag and get a sure out. At least two times already in my short "my player" career I've had a guy on 2nd and the 3rd baseman makes a tough stop, and then ignores the runner in order to throw late to first base and get NOBODY.

On a double play, the lead runner never makes any attempt to get out of the way of the ball, unless he's taking out the pivot man.

I've never ONE TIME had any of my fielders assist on a bunt play, besides the catcher. Even if it's smoked down the line. Similarly, when the ball is hit to my first baseman in the hole my pitcher won't get off his *** and run over there. It takes like 10 minutes for the pitcher to reach a decent running speed.

It's heartbreakingly close due to the interface, broadcast audio, etc., but leaves a lot to be desired. I'm incredibly embarrassed i actually bought this game, becuase I knew I was gonna be disappointed.

Re: Official MLB 2K10 Impressions (360/PS3)

Are you sure that's how you feel Helli lol?

The cpu AI in terms of where to throw the ball is shaky once in awhile. This morning I saw an example of awful AI in that department. I had the bases loaded with two outs and I hit a routine grounder to SS. The SS threw the ball home! I was safe at the plate but that should have never happened! It's an automatic throw to first or a short flip to second for the force out. I just shook my head on that one. It's those types of issues with this game that will shorten the lifespan of this title. I really hope the patch fixes some things.

I did make a base running error and got caught in a run down at the plate. I knocked over the catcher and the ball popped out. I scored! That was cool.

Re: Official MLB 2K10 Impressions (360/PS3)

Still playing, still enjoying the gameplay, but I have to say this again: I'm a franchise guy, and the franchise mode is simply poor.

- There must be a way to determine a player's potential.
- Budgets and the way high-priced free agents are handled must be fixed. Prince Fielder should not be re-signing with Milwaukee for $4 million/year.

These two simple things would make this an absolutely wonderful game.

Re: Official MLB 2K10 Impressions (360/PS3)

I have to say this about MLB 2K10. For anyone reviewing this game it's very difficult to grade. We've got no errors, injuries, fatigue and AI issues. I think the graphics and animations need work. I think the fielding is way too automated and is simply bad. It's not really a sim product imo. Despite all these problems it is fun to play. I don't know if I've ever played a game this long that had this many issues but was still enjoyable.

Will I still be playing regularly in one or two months? I'm not sure although it's unlikely unless the patch cleans up some things. Flawed products eventually annoy you.
