Why is it so far away? I played the demo, and it was the same as last year. I feel like with the way it is, I'm trying to spot this beachball inside the strike zone. Is this on purpose? Can I go back to the old style?

Yes you can change up the cameras. I changed up the pitching and the batting to my liking. I changed the pitching more behind my pitcher and zoomed in more over the shoulder view. And for batting I got more of a level hieght zoomed in a little more so I can tell strikes and balls better.
