He isn't making a big stink about it. He understands that he's not a starter in our OF, so would like to get a chance elsewhere while he's still in his prime. I think he's 32 right now so it's reasonable for him to want to start somewhere while he can, I just don't think there's much the Red Sox can do to accomodate him right now.

Unless a trade involving him comes along that will benefit the club there's little chance he gets traded. No contending team that is in need of a starting outfielder is looking at Jay Payton real seriously.

Other than maybe the Giants i don't think there is anywhere Payton could go right now and be a starter.

Well, the Sox got shut-out for the first time this season last night. It just stunk that they wasted a nice outing by Wakefield in doing so.

Speaking of the Giants, Peter Gammons reports that the Sox were in talks with them about Jason Schmidt. However, they haven't liked what they have seen out of him and do not appear to be on the verge of making an offer.

Interesting lineup for the Sox today. Nixon is leading off, Millar is playing LF and batting 4th and Olerud is at 1st. Damon and Manny are out of the lineup today. Damon has been banged up with a shoulder injury and Manny got hit by the pitch last night and was due for a day off anyways.

I was thinking about Jason Schmidt today. A year ago, he'd be one of my top targets in all of baseball for that Sox rotation. But for some reason, he doesn't seem worthy of a Hanley Ramirez prospect package anymore. The Giants may not want to shell out his asking price in the offseason due to arm injuries or maybe it's that 5.40 ERA thus far, but he's come down in value about as quick as Gagne. I wonder what it would cost to get him.... I DON'T want to see Hanley go, and even a guy like Papelbon seems foolish to let go of.

If we trade Hanley, we'd have to look more seriously at resigning Damon, and the combination of Damon and Schmidt would cost about 20 mil a year...and that's not Theo's style.

Who do you think the Sox should look at before the deadline and in the offseason to fortify the rotation and get us younger at the front most importantly? Obviously take out guys like Ben Sheets who just reupped their commitments to perennial losers like the Brewers.

By the time Schilling gets back, the rotation should be all set. Sure, we could get younger, but that can be done in the offseason. What the Sox need most by July 31st is a solid middle reliever. Timlin has been outstanding as the setup man, and Foulke has been pitching like Foulke lately, but Embree and Mantei just aren't getting it done. Myers does a great job as a lefty specialist, but we need a reliable guy that can consistently pitch the 7th, or even the 8th to give Timlin a break.

Re: Official Boston Red Sox 2005 Thread

I would much rather see the Sox strengthen their bullpen than go after another starter, as was mentioned Embree and Mantei have struggled and they are going to wear out Mike Timlin. I wouldn't mind seeing them try to get Mike Gonzalez from Pittsburgh or David Riske from Cleveland. With a healthy Schilling the Sox have a good rotation, Matt Clement has been outstanding, David Wells has pitched well his last couple of starts, Wade Miller is still a work-in-progress and Arroyo and Wakefield have pitched better of late.
Theo needs to focuss on the bullpen.
