What a horrible, horrible inning. What a meltdown by the entire team, from Cano to Damon to Matsui to the entire bullpen.

We've got to take 2 of 3 in Anaheim.

Yep the Yanks season will be over if they lose the first two series of the season. You sound like a Red Sox fan, pre 2004.

I didn't mean it like that,

1-5 or 2-4 isn't the way to start out the season, with such high hopes. That's all. It's especially frustrating after the first game.

Yah I know, just giving you a hard time. I still don't see any way this team doesn't slug their way into the playoffs.

The Pirate, Braves and Padres all have longer threads than us so far this year, what is going on boys!?!

JK, we just need to get back east so us old fogies can actually watch the games. Then this thread should get pumping.

Re: The 2006 New York Yankees

Defense has killed us 2 straight games now. First Matsui couldn't make the play in left, then Jeter, Damon, Cano. Wow, terrible.

No team needs to do anything in April, really. April and May are evaluation periods for good clubs so they can identify their strengths and weaknesses and see what they need to do to sustain success for the rest of the season. Yankees fans should be happy both Johnson and Mussina pitched effectively to a decent lineup on the road and that all of the important gears in the Yankees machine appear healthy.

Defense will likely be the Achilles heal of this team all year. The fielder ratings last year for the Yankees regulars (with projected ratings in parantheses) according to BP:

Damon: -4(1)
Jeter: 9 (-3)
Matsui: LF 1 (-3), CF -2*
Rodriguez: -5 (0)
Sheffield: -3 (0)
Giambi: -8 (-9)
Posada: -4 (-2)
Cano: -2 (-1)
Williams: -2 (-3)

*= Matsui is not projected to play any games in CF

A score of 0 means neutral, while a positive score means the player was not a liability at times. As one can see, only Jeter and Matsui had positive ratings last year and only Damon is projected as having a positive rating for this year (with Arod and Sheffield being neutral). I think their formulas are a little abusive to Jeter because of his past years of poor defense (his rating for 2003 was -19) but he has improved significantly over the past 2 seasons, though with Giambi playing first that could be one reason why he is projected as having a bad year (though Tino Martinez was rated as a -7 last year). This year's defensive replacement Andy Phillips is projected as having a neutral rating so he should help late in games. It is quite clear that if the Yankees are as bad as projected defensively they will need to rely on the power pitching of Johnson and hope they can slug their way to success (which I think they will). They better hope they have their defense shored up come October though, as the poor defensive teams almost never experience post season success.
