It's just the fact that A-Rod is having a down year when the team needs him more than ever. If he was having this year with Sheff and Matsui in the lineup it wouldn't be nearly as big a deal. Also that last year was the 1st time he put up A-Rod numbers for us and now this he seems to have backtracked again.

Look at the lineup everybody but A-Rod has stepped up. Jeter is having one of his best years, Posada too. Bernie has been much better than expected and Melky has been a surprise, as has Phillips. Giambi has continued on from last year and Damon has been steady. Before Cano got hurt he was doing great. The only guy in the lineup that is having a down year is A-Rod.

It was only his 2nd year with the team!

Some of you guys are crazy. The guys on pace to finish .285 with 36 HR's and 121 RBI's and you're not happy with that?

I agree. No, he's not having an MVP type year but he's still putting up very good numbers. It almost seems to me that Arod is in a no win situation in New York.

No I agree people are to hard on A-Rod and thats half the reason why he is having a down year. Its just disappointing that hes having a down year after his MVP year and when the would really need for him to carry them.

Re: The 2006 New York Yankees

I heard Torre say on the FAN that Dotel had a "bad day" today, and is going to see the team doctor.

Every time it seems like he's close, there's a setback.

For good news, Phillip Hughes is still dominating AA:
"Phil Hughes was the winning pitcher in Monday night's 7-0 Thunder victory over Binghamton. He allowed three hits and no runs while walking one and striking out nine as he ran his consecutive-scoreless-innings streak to 22 2/3."

Its a very odd situation with him. His numbers look pretty darn good... but people (including myself) can only seem to remember him failing in big spots.

I was taking a look at his stats and found some interesting things:

AVG/OPS

Scoring Position .305/1.000
Scoring Posn, 2 out .318/1.047

Thats pretty damn good right?

But wait...

Close and Late .192/.571

Thats bad. And thats why people think of him as a choker. I mean the stat isnt perfect... but its a decent barometer of a player's ability to perform in crunch time.

Some other interesting things to note:

Batting 4th: .266/.835
Batitng 5th: .404/1.247

Divisional Opponents:

Baltimore: .200/.478
Boston: .222/.789
Toronto: .176/.920 (This is a strange one)
Tampa Bay: .133/.464

Re: The 2006 New York Yankees

ABP (All-Base %) in Situations

Alex Rodriguez

Total - .586
RISP - .652
2+ RISP - .880
No Outs - .607
Extra Innings - .833

Late Innings - .452
2 Outs - .538
1st Inning - .484

vs. Baltimore - .235
vs. Boston - .585
vs. Tampa Bay - .306
vs. Toronto - .643
vs. DIVISION - .467

I see no trend with this man... and although at first I believed I would find a trend, none exists. He really doesn't suck in any certain situation, whether it be vs. divisional teams, in late innings, or early innings... we as New York fans just can't accept that the guy has had a year that doesn't exactly match his past. We really need to settle down at this point, and everything will be fine. And then I found this...

vs. Teams with a Win% better than .525 - .663

Thing is everyone... he's delivering... that is a sick ABP against great teams... what more can you ask for??? I can't think of anything.

The problem with this, along with a lot of similar stats is sample size. Is 50 at bats in close and late situations a large enough sample to come to a reasonable conclusion? I don't think so but others might disagree. FWIW, in the last 3 years he has a .945 OPS in close and late situations (228 AB) compared to a .972 OPS overall.
