I hope they stand pat...I mean the offense and defense have been great and there's no real holes to plug there. Bullpen has been shaky but has been OK lately and with MDC and Hansen playing a more vital part they're looking up. The starting pitching has had some problems. Lester has looked pretty good, but has probably been overperforming. The Johnson and Snyder experiments have been failing but if we can get anything out of Clement, Wells, or Wake down the stretch it'll be a big boost. Unless there's a great deal to be had, just sit with the team we've got now.

I don't think they need to do anything. With Wells on his way back they get the starter they so desperately need and I'm fine if the fifth spot goes to Gabbard or Clement until Wake gets healthy. If they can add a good lefty to the bullpen that would be a plus, but it isn't a necessity.

Re: Boston Red Sox - 2006

I think they could use another starter, but every team could and i don't think the Sox will give up as much as other teams unless a blockbuster comes along, which it won't.

At most, I think they'll trade junk relievers (Tavarez/Seanez) for somebody elses junk relievers.

One thing that seems clear is that without Gammons around we're not going to hear about what the Red Sox are working on until it happens. The front office seems much more tight lipped. I don't remember the last time I saw an article that quoted a source in the Red Sox front office.

Re: Boston Red Sox - 2006

New rumor out there is that Foulke and the $ for his buyout will be moved for starting pitching, allegedly from either San Francisco or Colorado. To me, this seems like a very Theo-esque move (not taking away from the ML roster). I could definitely see this happening because they're obviously not going to bring back Foulke next year. The $ they spend to buy out the 2007 option of his contract will be spent later in the calendar year. Why not just spend it now and get a starter back for the stretch run?

Not a bad plan, but I'd think it's heavily dependant on how Foulke looks in Pawtucket on Sunday.

Re: Boston Red Sox - 2006

FWIW, from Buster Olney's blog today:

Quote:
Anybody who has struck rock while using a shovel could relate to the next trade tidbit. Heard from two talent evaluators yesterday that Boston is very active in trying to come up with a large and creative deal, involving more than two teams. Smart thinking, one of them said, if it all works. Crazy stuff you wouldn't normally think of, said another. An executive with an AL team reports that he's heard that a scout was rushed off his area coverage to go scout Boston minor leaguers.

Heh, that isn't a surprise. The Red Sox are always trying to work out some mega deal but they usually don't happen. The only one that did was the Garciapara trade which was only a big deal because it included an injured Nomar Garciapara.

Yah, I still don't expect much to happen.

The Phillies were apparently asking for Lester our Hansen for Jon Lieber.
