I agree. I think Mirabelli's value to this team is vastly overrated, even with Wakefield in the rotation. Adding a bat like Lopez could be key at this point. Given a change of scenery and being on a team in contention could be just what he needs this year. I really don't think the Sox would have to give up much to get him either.

Sean McAdam is on WEEI right now. He said the Red Sox offered to pay half of Lopez's salary but Balitmore wants more. The Sox would also send a mid level prospect. This is a no brainer for the Sox IMO. Lopez clears waivers at 1pm today.

Re: Boston Red Sox - 2006

The Orioles are nearly impossible to deal with, and they have some leverage here since the Sox need to get a catcher. They should just pay all of the 4 million or so remaining on Lopez's deal and send them some kid from A-ball.

One thing I do like about Lopez is that he does something Varitek can't, and that's hit Mike Mussina. He's a .320 career hitter off of Mussina with a couple of homeruns. I hate it when Francona starts Varitek in a game where the Sox are facing Mussina. Though Mirabelli is a career .417 hitter against Mussina and thats never stopped him from playing Varitek in the past...

Yah, I don't think the money will stop this from getting done. He's owed about $2.7 mil and comes off the books after this year. No brainer.

Rumor has been Abe Alvarez + cash.

Varitek will not be back until after the Sept 1 roster expansion. With 40-man rosters, Javy would be able to stay up and they could easily keep Tek, Lopez, and Mirabelli on the roster for the rest of the year.

According to ESPN Radio in Boston, the Red Sox have acquired Javy Lopez from the Orioles.
Ken Huckaby's stay in Boston will be a short one. Lopez could share time pretty evenly with Doug Mirabelli initially. It's a better situation than he was in as an Oriole, but it still might not leave him with a great deal of fantasy value. Once Jason Varitek returns, he might cease being an option in fantasy leagues. Aug. 3 - 5:52 pm et
Nothing on what the O's are getting.

God I hope so... I'd love to get rid of Abe, can't believe how hyped he was a few years ago with a mid 80's fastball.

Re: Boston Red Sox - 2006

I wonder how many teams in the history of baseball have played pretty much the entire season with their firstbasemen being their leadoff hitter?

This is what I like to see, and what the Sox failed to do on Tuesday. After a walk-off win the night before, you always want to see start the next game strong. I'd have liked it even more if Manny had delivered with the bases loaded in the second.
