Re: 2006 Atlanta Braves Discussion

Well, that looks pretty dumb now, doesn't it? At least you didn't quote where I said the bullpen would be better than expected.

I probably went a little overboard with the Salty praise last year, but I still like him. He struggled with a wrist injury, but still finished pretty strong, I believe...

Best I can tell he's only played C and a little 3B in the minors. From what I've read, though, he's a good enough athlete to play left.

EDIT: Just looked up Salty's stats in the Arizona Fall League. He's doing all right, I guess (.565 AVG, 3 HR, 12 RBI, 1.655 OPS).

Just 6 games, but damn.

With LaRoche and McCann holding down 1B and C, if we can't work Salty in at LF, as much as it pains me to say this....we should trade him for a star pitching prospect.

Re: 2006 Atlanta Braves Discussion

I doubt we'd see a straight up prospect-for-prospect trade, those are kinda rare (particularly top prospects). But if we make a major deal this winter, I'd expect him to be a part of it. I imagine that's one of the reasons the Braves kept him behind the plate, you'd assume he'd have more trade value as a catcher...

Well ya, I wouldnt expect it straight up for another prospect...but maybe he'd be packaged in a trade with Giles to land us a starter or something. Whatever it is, we need pitching help, and that cant be said enough. I'd be willing to trade off Salty if it meant bringing in a solid arm to put behind Smoltz and Hudson.

I have a really bad feeling we're gonna get, like crap for Giles. Barely anything. Maybe that's my (lack of) confidence in Schuerholz showing...

Hopefully I'm wrong, it's been known to happen (see that LaRoche post for evidence).

I agree that we aren't going to get much of anything for Giles. Maybe Schuerholz will shock us all, but....... no he's not going to shock us, we're not getting much for Giles.

I really am going to miss watching Giles play. He's been the fire in the dugout for the last few years, beating the hell out of everyone after they hit a homerun. It's gonna suck when he's gone.

On Wednesday, the Padres traded young second baseman Josh Barfield to Cleveland for a pair of prospects. So, the defending NL West champs, with new manager Bud Black, might not mind having a veteran named Giles at second base in addition to the one in right field.

The brothers have talked for years about how much they would like to play with one another.

"If it could work out for Marcus to play with his brother, that would be a great thing," said Joe Bick, agent to both of the Giles brothers. "It's one of those things ... it's almost like it's too much to hope for. We'll just see how it works out."
