Re: 2006 Atlanta Braves Discussion

Braves beat-writer Dave O'Brien posted this in his blog today regarding Glavine (he's generally been pessimistic about the Braves' chances):

Quote:
If I had to make a guess based on phone calls and the like today, I have a strong suspicion the Braves and Glavine’s agent are talking contract and seeing if this thing will work. I keep going back and forth on this, but the longer we go without any word from Glavine’s camp, the more it makes me realize how badly he wants to come back to Atlanta….

Breaking News on Tom Glavine

By Bill Shanks
The Braves Show Publisher
Posted Nov 28, 2006

The Braves Show's Bill Shanks has news on Tom Glavine.

The Braves Show has learned that the Atlanta Braves are close to a contract to bring back left-hander Tom Glavine.

Glavine has been contemplating a return to New York, where he has spent the last four seasons pitching with the Mets. But with his family and home still in Atlanta, and the prospect of winning his 300th career game in an Atlanta uniform, the lure of once again being a Brave is strong.

Sources say the deal could be in the $7-$8 million area and could also include some type of option for the 2008 season.

Glavine was 242-143 in his sixteen seasons with the Braves before leaving for the Mets in December of 2002. He was 48-48 in his four seasons with the Mets, including a 15-7 season in 2006. He’s 290-191 in his career, making him ten wins shy of the magical 300 number of wins.

Glavine will be 41 years old next March. He first came up with the Braves in 1987 and won two Cy Young Awards (1991 and 1998). Glavine is a ten-time All Star, including eight appearances as a Brave.

I don't know how I got that. I'm serious. I'm not an insider. The first time I clicked on it that came up, I refresh it and it goes back to the normal "click here for the rest of the story."

There was another guy on there who had the same thing happen. Not sure what's up.

Anyway, hope this proves to be true.

So, you glad Glavine's apparently coming back?

You may have noticed from my avatar, that I'm in favor of it.

Even setting aside sentimentality, I don't think we could do any better for $7-8 mill in this market.

I'm definitely glad he's apparently returning. I'm still scared to death of this bullpen though, since that was the main problem last year.
