The Mets are expected to offer Tommy arbitration before the deadline runs out tonight, meaning we'd have to cough up a second round pick.

Carl Crawford is out there and can be had but the price is going to be steep...probably too steep for us.
Crawford's going to be a star one day, so it'll take tons of cash to land him. I really don't see the Bravos coughing up enough dough.

ESPN News says Glavine and the Mets have agreed to a 1-year deal.

Well, I guess the tease was fun while it lasted.

Hrm, according to Gammons (via Rotoworld) we never even made an offer. Interesting.

Re: 2006 Atlanta Braves Discussion

I hope the Braves don't sign anyone. I don't want to vastly overpay for anyone. I don't think we need any pieces to tell you the truth. I guess if we can get a solid RP for Giles, but no signings. I feel we have a very good offense as is, and the pitching will just have to rely on guys bouncing back and having solid years.

Quote:
"Absolutely we [wanted him]," Braves general manager John Schuerholz said. "We spent a lot of time trying to create a situation where we could bring Tommy back.

"What does that mean? That means we were trying to make deals that would free up space on our payroll to fit him in, because, to be candid, he was the guy we were focused in on. And it just didn't work. It might have in a day or two."
Quote:
"We weren't able to clear the space, and as I learned today, today was the date upon which he was going to make a decision," Schuerholz said. "And he did. We just didn't have the capability of engaging in serious contract negotiations because we didn't have the certainty of being able to fit it into our payroll.

"But we tried."
Quote:
Glavine said he and his wife, Christine, made the decision Wednesday to return to the Mets, but waited to see if anything would change Thursday or Friday.

"I don't know if it was just a situation where I was thinking I would have an offer from the Mets and an offer from the Braves [by now], and like anything you compare those two offers and all the life issues and make a choice. In the end, that didn't happen. I didn't have an offer from the Braves to compare."
Quote:
"We're disappointed," the GM said. "We really hoped we could do it for a varity of reasons. Having him put on the Braves uniform again, we thought he would be a great addition to our pitching staff, our team, our organization. But it didn't work. In order for us to get fully engaged or aggressively engaged in salary negotiations, we needed to clear space.

"It might have happened in the next day or two, but it didn't [yet]."
