NEW YORK -- Cole Hamels was scratched from his start Wednesday after experiencing shoulder pain while playing catch on Tuesday.
The much heralded prospect with a history of injuries was playing long toss from a distance of 120 feet, and cut that short. Jon Lieber will start in his place, with Brett Myers and Cory Lidle to follow.

Hamels described the sensation as a "pop."

"It's frustrating, especially when you're training so hard to prevent these things from happening," Hamels said. "You don't want to let people down, especially with what I've had to go through. I just want to make sure that the team is aware and they can do something."

Hamels will return to Philadelphia for an examination, and doesn't want to worry too much.

"I have to be optimisitc, but I've had so many [injuries] and don't want to take any more chances," he said.

Health has held Hamels back since he was drafted in 2002. He missed most of the 2004 season with elbow tendinitis, then lost the first half of 2005 due to a broken left hand, and the second half to back problems.

Now it's his shoulder.

"What can you do?" he said. "It's just something that, every time you get an injury, you get stronger and stronger, and you can accomplish new goals whenever you set your mind to it. Things weren't made to be easy. I can't look back on things and worry about other things that are going to happen. You have to worry about the next day and how you're going to make yourself better."

Ha! Yeah right...he's just afraid to face NEW YORK!!

Just kidding my Philly friends...just kidding.
Hope the kids okay.

Well Hamels is on the DL now, and Lieber is blaming the loss on the umpire, so that's a fair assessment.

Lieber's umpire argument would probably hold a little more water if he hadn't been pitching like total *** since the season started.

I guess maybe all the umpires have bad strike zones, except whoever did the game in Cinci....

Re: 2006 Philadelphia Phillies Thread

hey - at least you guys have a semblance of a pitching staff, & not being forced to use the Limas & Gonzalezes retreads... i would blame that loss on Cormie (sp) - how many times can you throw the same pitch in the same location before the batter picks up on that?

Our bullpen has struggled recently. I've said all along that this team will play well enough to keep Manuel around all year...which is a bad thing. If he were fired now, I'd consider us a legit threat for a playoff spot.

true - his "double switching" the other night cost you both Bell & Burrell for the remainder of the marathon
