Aoki would have been better for this lineup. It's still early, so Byrd has a chance to get going at some point, but right now he is the worst starter in all of baseball. Last (193/193 qualified players) in WAR so far (-0.7), dead last 193/193 in OBP (.137), last 193/193 in wRC+ (-27, didn't know that's possible), and 188/193 in AVG.

Good win tonight for Reds though...

Re: 2015 Cincinnati Reds

I was lukewarm on the Marlon Byrd acquisition, but I figured he couldn't do worse that Luddy. Zips projected Byrd to put up numbers similar to 2014. However, Steamer projected a dip in his performance, which would prove the acquisition to be a downgrade.

2014 Ryan Ludwick: .244/.308/.375 91 wRC+
2015 Marlon Byrd (Zips projection): .262/.304/.459 109 wRC+
2015 Marlon Byrd (Steamer projection): .242/.288/.393 87 wRC+

But goodness gracious, I don't think anybody expected a start like this....

.122/.137/.143 -27 wRC+
Zips updated projection: .249/.289/.430 96 wRC+
Steamer updated projection: .230/.274/.368 76 wRC+

I wanted Nori Aoki too. I know Byrd was the cheaper option (since the Phils are footing half the bill and that's assuming Aoki hits his incentives). But, surely to goodness, we could've squeezed an extra $1-$2 million out of the budget to outbid the Giants.

Current: .344/.408/.438 148 wRC+
Zips updated projection: .289/.354/.370 113 wRC+
Steamer updated projection: .287/.352/.378 114 wRC+

I would've liked that in LF instead of Byrd.

God Bless Joey Votto.

Re: 2015 Cincinnati Reds

I was thinking about the future a little bit this morning. This team has a lot of talent and good players, but I feel like with the way Jocketty handles the team, they will never win. I think you have to trade Cueto, Leake, Phillips, and maybe Bruce (depends what they can get back) all this year. Need to build this team for 2016 but more so for 2017. They need to trade Cueto for a top hitting propsect -- someone like Joc Pederson or Corey Seager, hopefully middle infield. Same for Leake, but obviously the prospect(s) won't be as good. Phillips is the type of player you could probably trade for a reliever and have to take half his salary, which I think is fine. You would need a lot back for Bruce, and I think the Reds should look around at options for trading him. I think Chapman is the player to resign, they need that type of pitcher out of the bullpen. Let's say they trade Cueto, Leake, and Phillips this year, it would look like this in 2017:
*The year in parentheses is the year they become a FA

C - Mesoraco (2018)
1B - Votto (2023)
2B - Prospect acquired in trade
SS - Cozart (2017)
3B - Frazier (2017)
LF - Winker
CF - Hamilton (2019)
RF - Prospect acquired in trade

SP:
Bailey (2020)
Desclafani (2020)
Cingrani (2019)
Stephenson
Lorenzen

RP:
F/A signings + Chapman

Basically, Jocketty needs to get a 2B and RF prospect and this team has a chance to be really good in 2017. It can't be that hard to get a top 2B and RF prospect by trading Cueto, Leake, Phillips, and Bruce, whose contract is up after next year.

The bullpen is where Jocketty can use extra payroll to get better relievers than we've had. I'm sure he can find something better than Kevin Gregg by then.

The future for the team looks pretty good, the problem is Jocketty is not the guy I want in charge for a quick rebuild like this.

The game is tied so who does he go to? Kevin Gregg! Price really doesn't have a clue I guess... Not to mention his refusal to use Cingrani instead of these other bums as well.

Re: 2015 Cincinnati Reds

Instead of ex-Cardinals, Reds are now rolling out ex-Cub players? All of been a complete failure and I would love to see them gone; Byrd, Gregg and Marquis. @redsrule, yes Price is clueless

Re: 2015 Cincinnati Reds

Went to the game tonight and another tough loss from the bullpen. Doesn't help that they were 0-14 with RISP. I don't understand why Cingrani isn't ever used. What is it 11 days now or something? 11th inning Price brings in Badenhop with Soler (R), Rizzo (L), Bryant (R), and Herrera (S) up to hit. LHB bat .276/.361/.425 against Badehop, Badenhop is a one inning 7th inning sort of guy. Wouldn't this have been a perfect situation to bring Cingrani in for a few innings, especially with Rizzo up 2nd in the 11th!?

Jocketty just can't build a bullpen. This is the the Reds bullpen compared to other NL Central teams this year:

Reds $23.12 million/41.1 IP/5.01 ERA (30th)
Cardinals $13.25 million/37.1 IP/1.69 ERA (2nd)
Cubs $11.31 million/49.0 IP/3.31 ERA (13th)
Pirates $12.84 million/48.0 IP/3.94 ERA (22nd)

Re: 2015 Cincinnati Reds

I applauded the signing of Badenhop, but my goodness, a sinker ball pitcher who can't keep the ball down is useless. He's not finishing off his pitches, and maybe it's time to solve this down in Louisville. 7 runs is about as low leverage as you can get, and Badenhop is a walking gasoline can.

How to fix the bullpen? Start by calling up LeCure and Iglesias. Second, get rid of bullpen 'roles'. Price has been more conventional than I thought he would be given by comments he has made (I get the feeling Uncle Walt may have a role in this as old school as he is).

Hindsight being 20/20, but my have the tables flipped. Bailey got the contract because he was healthier (and hey, he threw two no-hitters) than Cueto. Bailey back to the DL, while we'll probably be saying 'see ya' to Cueto.

And it's been 17 days since Mesoraco has started as a catcher....why has he been on the active roster Walt???????
