There is no rule about this though as some people think there is. It seems to be either an oversight or a case by case decision.

Ben Sheets and Justin Duchscherer were both on the A's roster out of the box.

Mike Sweeney and Kip Wells have been added with the first update

Speaking of guys like Sweeney, does anyone know why they used a generic face for him when he was added in this first update? He had a real face last year why can't they use the '09 face?

Something similar last year in that they had a good Chad Cordero face along with the straight brimmed hat and all. They eventually took him out of the roster all together. Don't quite understand why since he was in the minors all year. But I am willing to bet if they add him back this year he will have a generic face ala Sweeney.
