Question about Fielder Speed and Reaction in MLB 13

Ramone said there is a greater disparity and separation between average and great fielders. What do you think the sliders will look like for MLB 13?

In MLB 12, I have Fielder Speed at 2 and Fielder Reaction at 7.

    Thanks.

Obviously it's tough to tell just through videos, and I haven't even watched many videos myself, but from the looks of it, this area will need far less attention in '13. I'm pretty much expecting to just leave it at default, personally.

I thought it played just fine at default but I am sure some will want to go extreme.

        Thanks Nem

By default, you mean both Fielder Speed/Reaction set to 5?

In MLB 12, I think I have Fielder Speed at 1 and Fielder Reaction at 0, or the other way around.

It's far too fast on default.

            Yeah default is 5's.

I have more or less the same. I think my reaction is 2ish, and Speed is either 0 or 1.

Well, now that we all have the game:

I'm finding reaction time dreadfully slow at all four IF spots. Like they're not reacting as a major league ballplayer would. At times they don't react at all. Quicksand on routine grounders. Cheap CPU hits in franchise as a result. I mean, really cheap. Routine grounders, not hot shots. Not accustomed to seeing this.

It's almost as if the "assist" (vs. "auto") on fielding has been toned down to the point that it's barely giving you one.

I play AS level for hit & pitch and decided to crank fielder reaction from default 5 to 7, but still have not seen noticeable improvement.

Anybody else messing with this, and what results have you gotten?

Figured I'd tag this question here. Thanks.

I have bumped fielder reaction to 8 and still feel like the infielder's initial reaction is delayed...feels almost worse than when I had it on 7. This is pertaining to liners, not grounders.

I use auto fielding and let the cpu do all that stuff. Are you seeing this problem on assist or auto fielding? or both?

Yeah, it's bad this year. About twice a game when you are attempting to move your fielder toward the ball, the computer takes over and moves him in the opposite direction. I am hoping they fix this in the 1st patch... it is very frustrating.

Re: Question about Fielder Speed and Reaction in MLB 13

Just remember that fielder speed and reaction need to be moved in tune, and in conjunction with, the other sliders that are intertwined with them.

If you are going to lower the speed and reaction (which you have to because default is too high) you need to lower the baserunner speed as well.

Once you lower the baserunner speed, you need to lower the arm strength of the fielders.

Once you do that, you need to lower the CPU solid hits.

Once you lower the baserunner speed and the arm strength, you will see more animations play out, you will notice less of the herky jerky animation take-over with outfielders, you will need to take perfect routes to the ball, you will see fly balls actually get over the heads of slower outfielders, and the game opens up into the awesome gem that it is...

Everything moves and coexists with each slider move, so balancing it out is time consuming, but oh so rewarding...

This post is dead on point.

And I play with auto fielding, manual throwing.

You're post confuses me a little, in that, the previous posters all agreed that Fielder Reactions were too SLOW so i don't think anyone was discussing lowering the slider but instead raising it. What makes you feel so convincingly that default is too high?

I think he was more speaking by example or whatever. He didn't explicitly suggest that anything be lowered, and I don't believe it was his intent to do so. He was just explaining how the sliders are all inter-connected

syf - Appreciate your well thought out logic and explanation. My biggest difference with you is I don't turn down baserunner speed. I tried doing that in conjunction with turning down fielder speed and-while it would certainly seem to make sense-it didn't work as well as I'd expected. While '13 may be better than '12, it still seems that WAY too many runners were getting thrown out that shouldn't have, and at every base (and this is with arm strength reduced to 3).

In fact, even with these current settings, I think there are still a few too many runners gunned out at home by OF's with average/below average arms on plays that they should score.

This is obviously a personal preference issue, and for me, I most appreciate a game that seems to "look and play" most life like to me. While I hope the stats are close, I don't know if each and every statistic will match MLB averages compared with some of the other slider sets that people have put so much effort into.

But I will say that both infield plays and outfield play out as close to real thing as I've been able to find(but not perfect). I'll admit that the biggest drawback/negative is probably seen in big parks with big alleys that with fielder speed down produce more triples than in real life. I'll justify that by saying as it's the most exciting play in baseball, more is better, no? My two cents anyway...

(My pertinent slider settings: Fielder Reaction 7, Fielder Speed 2, Fielder Arm Strength 3)

Whatever your slider set, I think we all agree it's an incredible game. And no lie when I say it has genuinely brought back my deep appreciation for real baseball and more respect of the pitcher-hitter pitch-by-pitch battles than I probably ever had. Way better than my old Strat-o-Matic days Best $60 I spend every year. Thanks so much SCEA!
