Plate Vision and Plate Disc. ratings - What are they?
Could someone tell me? I see Juan Pierre's Vision is 100 and Disc 50, whereas Adam Dunn's Vision is 25 and Disc 100. So Plate Vision has to do with strikeouts it looks like - the lower the number, the more strikeouts. But what's Plate Disc do? Thanks.Tags: None -

Hmm, they are pretty self explanatory.
Plate Vision is how well they see the ball, which affects how good of contact they can make. A low plate vision will increase strikeouts.
Plate Discipline is how patient they are at the plate and will affect how many times they walk. Guys with high plate discipline (like Adam Dunn) will walk more because they are pickier at the plate. A guy with low plate discipline will be a hacker, willing to swing at just about anything, which will also affect strikouts. The two ratings work together.It's only a video game. -

The above is one question I have, and I would assume (?) the answer is yes. The other thing is this: Dunn doesn’t necessarily have a great eye, otherwise why does he strikeout so much? He gets a ton of intentional walks. So that rating doesn't necessarily have to do with how good an eye a player has. It must be a sim stat - to insure he and other high-walk batters like him get their 100+ walks each year.
Anyway, I guess I’m still not sure how these ratings actually affect user game play. But if as suggested, Dunn won’t swing at balls because he has a high Plate Disc rating, well, that doesn’t make much sense to me. I should be able to throw balls and have him chase, given his high strikeout numbers each year.Comment

low vision+high disc=lots of strikeouts, lots of walks (Adam Dunn, Mike Cameron)
high vision+high disc=few strikeouts, lots of walks (Gary Sheffield)

I just wanted to clarify something for myself, does this mean that if my vision and discipline ratings are high while I am playing the game I will see more balls in my at bats? I have had a hard time draeing walks in my career when i play, with Con: 50R 48L, Power: 45R 41L, Plate Vision: 77, Discipline: 89. In simming, I don't strike out much, but I don't walk a whole lot either...
I understand that those ratings may not affect the game much while I am playing, I am curious as to whether or not they impact the quantity of pitches out of the strike zone I would see while playing.
Also I have noticed that some players have smaller strike zones, though it does not seem to be reflected by their ratings. As I improved my player's vision and discipline, I saw no chacnge in my strike zone size. Any ideas?Comment

Plate vision might have to do with size of strikezone... I'm not sure. The size of the strike zone depends on the physical height of the batter. Short guys have smaller strike zones, as do players with crouched stances (which is one reason why Ricky Henderson drew so many walks in his career).Comment

I think the answer is that these ratings don't mean much for the user controlled player and this makes sense. All the programmers of the game can do is program how the CPU controllered players will react.
Plate Vision and Disc for the players we control are on us. For me, I have bad plate vision and disc, that is why I strike out with all of my players...lol. From a programming standpoint, this is probably almost impossible to change unless they "cheat" (which they probably do). Below would be my example of this cheat.
While at bat with Mike Cameron, I time the pitch perfectly, I set the perfect location, and then the "cheat" code makes me swing and miss because Mike strikes out alot.
This is probably the hardest part of video game programming IMO. If the programmers only had to worry about the CPU players, I would bet that we would see much better simulated stats. Since they have to adjust for the human player, they mess up the player ratings which then screws up stats. If this is the case, they should make two sets of ratings. One for simmed games and one set for games played.
It looks like a lose-lose situation for the programmers until someone comes up with a great solution to balance this out. ObviouComment
