MLB 09: The Show - Impressions
jtdribbles25 and rckabillyRaider have the game. For the time being, nobody but these two may post in this thread. All questions should be PMed to them, or saved until we have a few more users with the game.Tags: None -
Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions
real quick: Still in my 1st game. I just hit a HR with Casey Blake @ Dodger Stadium vs Giants. The crowd is very reactive and stood up appropriately, however the they didnt go after the ball like in the demo. Maybe cuz it just barely made it in the stands. Hopefully the crowd going for HR balls is still in the game. There are some Giants fans in my stadium
**** There are still some graphic clipping and collision detection issues. In this one game that I've played so far, it has been less than in 1 game of the demo. So thats good.
**** Blake Dewitt on the dodgers has no actual photo and his player model is pretty ugly IMO.
**** all player models seem to have a bit of an outline, aura type of thing going on which make them look pasted on the field at times.
***So far so good on the gameplay, but I never played 08 and I been an xbox 360 guy, so take that for whats it worth -
Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions
played with the dodgers as well. As noted the lighting effects and animations are just superb. There seems to be lots of fresh commentary as well. the chants are awesome, although, dodger stadium is not the most "chant happy" place it sounded great.
Playing Cubs at Pirates, on legend to test out the difference between high and low tiered teams.Comment

routes to hit balls and angles are really improved. And the differences between player skill level seems to actually matter.Comment

Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions
AWESOME game I just played!! down 2-1 to the the Giants and Lincecum in the bottom the 9th, James Loney hits a hr to tie it and knocks Lincecum out of the game. Crowd is super loud! Stays loud throughout the inning and the majority are standing. I get a man on board and then Blake Dewitt hits a walk off 2 run shot! Great crowd and cut scene. Trophies are earned for the walk off win and walk off HR.
Overall, very fun exhibition game. The crowd does go after foul balls but I did not see them go after HR's. Probably because the way Dodger stadium is configured, each HR did not make it to the crowd, except for one that bounced off the little platform in the outfield at the wall and then into the crowd. I will check out the sound editor options now.Comment

Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions
for those that asked........No World Baseball Classic. Exhibition has some minor league teams and a silver era and golden era team.
**Custom chants and yells are only with a mic, not mp3 files. Unless of course you record an mp3 playing through the mic? Each player has hr music, walk up music, reliever entry music, 3 Fan cheers, 3 fan jeers, 3 chant cheers, and 3 chant jeers
****during loading screens and also menu screens, there will be random actual audio from radio stations from baseball games last season.
Im out for the night guys. Gonna mess with the game a bit more. Sorry I cant give the greatest impressions because I am new to the game and ps3. Hopefully other "vets" will get the game tomorrow and give better impressions.Last edited by rckabillyRaider; 02-26-2009, 02:08 AM.Comment

Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions
Playing on legend seems to create some real mismatches. The ratings and differences between the teams is really evident. Overpowering lesser teams is pretty rewarding. Playing against much better teams also has a very organic feel, literally hoping for a mistake.Comment

Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions
Custom songs for walk ups and hr's sound really good! They sound like its part of the game. Has built in reverb and it also sounds like the songs automatically fade in and out. Very well done. I put the Dodger stadium HR song, Zombie Nation, sounds nice and makes u really feel like you are at the game. Haven't tried the custom chants, cheers and jeers cuz I don't have a mic or bluetooth. Maybe tomorrow I'll buy a cheap one. I just wish they had certain scenarios that would trigger certain songs or chants like in NCAA. Maybe next year SCEA!Comment

Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions
Unfortunately I'm on my way to work for 9 hrs. But from the few games I played last night, the cpu didn't hit me once.
The crowd noise is very well done and very smart and reactive. ARod got a huge booing at dodger stadium. Thought that was pretty cool.
The only thing right now that kinda sucks in the presentation is that the crowd has not made an attempt to go after a HR ball. I don't know if its just a dodger stadium as I've played all my games at dodger stadium. Maybe one of u guys that gets the game this morning can look into that. I'll play in other stadiums when I get home this evening.Comment

Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions
Here's a little video from record video upload to youtube or what ever video site its very easy, it saves in .mp4 and you can manipulate the camera. Commentary doesn't make it to the record, but the sounds does, I don't know yet if the crowd chants cheers or jeers make it yet.
The great part of the video transfer is using windows media maker to edit videos and make a great highlight package. Also the transfering to dvd to view your season or rtts on dvd at anytime is really cool.
I'm balancing my time with this and Killzone 2(believe the hype) online is a monster and the SP is awesome(great ai)

Impressions from jeffeyanboo
I did get to try battijng practice for a little while. In case you wanted to pass it along:
- You get 20 pitches per batting session
- You choose the batter as well as the pitcher you face
- You can select whatever pitches the pitcher you face throws. For example, if the pitcher throws a 4sfb, slider, circle change and 2sfb, you can select any or all of those pitches to be thrown in the 20 pitch session. As far as I know, they are thrown randomly.
- The balls that you hit stay on the field the entire session (or multiple sessions if you choose to continue after the 20 pitches are complete)... nice touch
- You feel like your "in the cage" because if you foul a pitch back or up , the ball ricochets and hits the cage in a realistic fashion
- I used Vlad Guerrero to hit (and did not do so well). After the session, there's a cut scene in which he walks away frustrated and then you see him talking to Angels hitting coach Mickey Hatcher... another cool touch.Comment

Batting practice is cool, its a nice addition what I would have liked to see in a BP would have been a replay analysis to show what you did wrong or right. right now its text based giving you results that is completely different from in game. The point of practice should have been a teaching tool. Why you popped up the 4SFB is because or to get a better batters eye look at the ball when its released from the pitcher hand.
MLB 09 the Show to me is the best looking game on the market bar none. The lighting is incredible. I tip my hat to SCEA SD, I expect to see you guys at GDC giving classess WOW.
No stuttering its freaking smooth as a babies bottom(not soiled of course). I love that you guys gave us so much freedom on the record feature(teach this to madden and live and 2k) this is above and beyond anything that they are doing. So much user freedom.
Oh, back to the game I will record the first 5 request for Pitchers chose a stadium and I will post it, so PM me and after the 1st 5 I will let you know in the thread.
Oh game play you can get hits over outfielders head and you can hit gaps, reaction times are noticeable, I haven't touched a slider yet, it plays stellar out of the box.
SCEA SD, when we're at bat and chose batters eye, allow us to zoom in and out to the out field, with the new lighting and shadows its crazy going from light to dark. It will also be cool to zoom in on the digital stat tracking boards.Comment
