RTTS, Getting Picked Off at First

Sorry, if this has been asked before.

I have a problem in RTTS, with my baserunning. I have no problem running when the ball is hit, nor running relative to the camera angle. My problem is that I make it to First Base on a single or a walk, and I soon get picked off.

I guess I am using the default "lead", and I have my thumb hovering over left stick ready to try to get him back if I see a pickoff attempt, but I'm still too slow and/or too late.

Should I be holding the left thumbstick full-left all the way through to the end of the pitch? Should I be holding one of the shoulder buttons (L1, L2, etc.)? I guess I'm just confused as to what I should be doing before the pitch. Please be descriptive!

Please note that I have no intention of stealing Second until I can get back to First safely, every time. So I'm just looking for advice on how best to not get picked off at First.

    Thanks in advance!

If you have no intention of stealing 2nd, then this is what I do when I'm not in a steal situation. Take a one step lead (L1) and then hold L3 back towards 1st base. So when the pitcher attempts to pick you off your player goes back automatically.

Hold L3 back until your sure the pitcher is throwing towards the batter, then let go of it so in case of a base hit your off and running.

That makes perfect sense. So it's sort of reverse logic; instead of trying to react to a pickoff attempt (nearly impossible), react to a hit (nearly automatic anyway). Thanks a million!

BTW, it'd be nice if the RTTS Baserunning training in the main menu would throw in some pickoff attempts, to keep you honest, and to practice the very thing I was asking about.

      Thanks again!

Yeah I agree, it took me awhile to get the baserunning down and now I have zero pickoffs. Reacting to a hit is much easier as a baserunner then reacting to a pickoff attempt.

Now you just have to get stealing down.

Re: RTTS, Getting Picked Off at First

Someone posted a great technique in the RTTS thread, sorry I don't have their name, but it's helped me a ton. Take your lead and hold R1 to lean towards the base. Keep it held down, and hold the left stick all the way left as well. As soon as the pitcher makes a move, if it's a pickoff, you'll dive back to the base. If it isn't, your guy won't react, so mash the left stick to the right to take off. This technique works wonders on first base.

If you're on second and your speed rating is good enough, take a big lead, and hold down both R1 and left. Even if it is a pickoff, mash right as soon as your player reacts and 9 times out of 10 you'll get to third safely. It doesn't count as a steal though, if you're looking to pad your stats. I've used this technique to get a walkoff "steal" of home a couple times.
