    Simpler days of gaming

I was thinkin how much we seem to demand perfection from our games nowadays instead of just always having fun.

I am to blame as much as anyone, as most of us can nitpick issues deemed small or large.

Remember back in the day? Look how far we have come:

I remember playing that game and how awewome it was.

Now we demand correct stats, lineups, player specific apparel, identical stadiums, etc. . . sometimes I think I just need to sit back and have a good time, because for every thing we all complain about that The Show does wrong or could do better, there are hundreds of things the game does right and phenominal.

I dunno, just up late and bored. . .

lol, its funny you should mention this because I was thinking about the exact same thing about 30 minutes ago. I think a lot of it is because graphics look so much like the real thing these days that people expect games to play exactly like the real thing. Personally, I believe graphics have surpassed gameplay as far as realism goes. I think its been that way for awhile now.

I remember back in the day I didn't really care if the gameplay wasn't altogether realistic because the graphics were so unrealistic that you couldn't help but know that you were just playing a video game. The graphics are so good these days though, that when certain parts of the gameplay is unrealistic it stands out like a sore thumb.

Usually when I stop worrying about a game being totally realistic, I enjoy it much more.

Excellent point. Like you said, flaws back then were easy to ignore because we all knew it was just a game. It looked like a game and played like one.

Now, and even moving forward, every graphical glitch is magnified because everything around it looks so real. Every gameplay glitch is magnified because of the technology and the demand for super realistic gameplay.

I still to this day fire up Ken Griffey Jr's MLB for the SNES. I will always love that game, even with its missing MLBPA license, lack of errors, and outfielders that can throw from the warning track to home plate without the ball bouncing...

I even overlooked the fact that the cartridge would seem to fail and reset all data about 70 games into a full 162 game schedule.

          Man that game is awesome!

That's very true. People now just don't know what they have. I remember when i used to sit up all night playing sports games that didn't even have people's names on them. I do understand though, because then games were not $60 a pop either though and as someone with a 360 (I have the Show for PSP) I'll be damned if I'm going to spend $60 for some half rate product that I can hardly enjoy playing.

the first baseball game i ever played was All-Star Baseball 2003 for the Gamecube lol

it was the last game to have Barry Bonds in it, so that was kinda cool.

i used to just pop the game in a play for a couple of hours almost every day, now i cant even start a season if the stats and rosters arent correct

I had to unlock thing ect , but it was mostly just having fun when video games were just fun not trying to be exact real life .

Man, I cant believe I used to play that game!!!
I mean it was great at the time but now its like, how can you complain about today's baseball games!
Graphics and gameplay have a looooooooong way.
I used to play bases loaded and r.b.i. baseball before going to world series baseball on genesis.
So far, IMO, there have been 3 great baseball games in my lifetime...

You must not have MLB 2K9 then!

I did and took a loss and eBayed that crap and bought The Show and a PS3 and just can't believe the realism.

Well, I was around when they brought out the first Civil War Baseball 64 and Civil War Baseball II, and I certainly don't miss them. They were fun for the time, and I put in Triple Play awhile back and Interplay (which I loved) and.......I didn't like the simpleness of the game. I could never get through a season with any of them.

I gotta say one thing about this game. There are a few warts in it, I usually make it through most all games without seeing any of them and am just in awe (finally after all these years). When I do see something I just reminisce and I find myself instantly cured.

                          Re: Simpler days of gaming

I am one to say that many of the younger generation of gamer who complain about sock color, visor color, shoe string color, etc. have no idea what it was like 10-15 years ago when real teams were in the game but there weren't faces, jerseys, etc.

However, can I blame them? It's almost like blaming today's pro athletes for signing a 100 million dollar contract.

Games today have high expectations, and Madden is probably the one that gamers are most critical of because a) EA has the exclusive license and / or b) EA set the bar extremely high in the early 90's that people expect that bar to elevate at a quicker rate

I, for one, enjoyed the games on the Nintendo, Genesis and Commodore 64 growing up however today's games with the absolutely incredible graphics were a "wish" when I was a kid. I will look at graphics of today's games and I think to myself if games looked like this when I was a kid, I would have never left my house....EVER!!

Never thought about it. Probably is an age-generational thing.

People that get worked up about sock color and sleeve length leave me speechless.

But that's 'cause I'm an old fart, I guess! I used to roll dice and picture it all in my mind. Today's games are beyond my wildest dreams. Like having the coolest game you could play at an arcade... right in your home, any time you want!
