MLB09: Game won't start without PSNetwork connection?

Along with some other people who have already posted in the Console forum, I can't login to the Playstation Network today. I've checked, and my internet connection is working fine.

What's worse is that it appears that my copy of MLB09 won't start without being able to connect. At least that's how it seems. I've had zero problems with the game before, and now I just get a black screen when I try to start the game.

This is strange because my copy of CH2k8 & Madden 10 start OK. In fact its been so long since I've played Madden it found an update that its downloading right now -- not quite sure how that's working when I can't connect to the PS Network!

Can you really not play The Show offline if you can't connect?

I just tried playing Heavy Rain and it wont allow me to play it. I think it has to do with the trophies. I guess this is what you pay for when PSN is free. So our games are currently unplayable.

Phew, it's not just me! I was going crazy a bit ago!

I kept trying to sign in, and when it wouldn't let me, I figured "I'll just play while offline." NOPE!

I'm betting it'll be up at some point tonight or early tomorrow. They might be overhauling their servers preparing for Tuesday!

Thanks for responding. I could care less about trophies... until now.

I can't believe that they implement this in a way that makes your game disc a coaster if your PS3 can't connect.

same here in the uk unfortunately..apparently a worldwide problem..hopefully it'll be fixed sharpish but if this affects me on tuesday..well..

I was worried as well. I just bought a new TV and was excited about Tuesday, then I got an error message (8001050F) and when I Googled it people were saying it was a hardware issue and I needed to contact Sony. Thankfully I found this link...

BEFORE YOU GUYS GIVE UP:

this is common, happened to me a lot last year with 09

its not that you CAN'T sign in when you are offline, it just takes LONGER!

last year, it was about 50/50 whether i would be affected while not signed in, half the time it would work, the other half, i would have to wait as long as 5 minutes sometimes for the black screen to go away and for the game to load...

leave the black screen for 10 minutes at least and see if it loads eventually

I haven't tried this yet, but what if you just disconnect altogether from the internet so it's not trying to connect?

I know I played my PS3 (namely The Show 09!) while I was in Iraq without any internet connection.

I am relieved after reading on here and another forum that it is the network. I put in The Show and all I got was a black screen. I was thinking that the game or my PS3 were broken.

wait on the black screen for at least 10 minutes... happened to me last year, it will work, just WAIT!

I'm giving it a shot, but 5 mins so far & no luck. This just further proves to me that the only reason I own a PS3 is for MLB:The Show. I swear 99% of my gaming time is spent on it, and even though I own several other games, there's really nothing else I want to play.

I'm actually holding off on buying '10 for a while because my Indians chise is doing so well (approaching Sept 2010 with a 5 game lead in the AL Central & just traded for Peavy). The Tribe in '10 is going to be a massive rebuilding project. I suppose that can be fun too, but I'm not willing to give up on my alternate reality where the Indians are a contender to win it all!

Waited at the black screen for 15 mins, and the game never started. Even tried disabling my wireless network, turned off the PS3 then back on, and the game still won't start. Oh well, guess I find something else to do with my Sunday night...
