his diagram is correct because it depicts the situation with a runner on first. The first baseman's job then is to run to the mound on a ball in the gap or down the line(extra base hit) in order to serve as a cutoff man for a possible throw to the plate.

No runners on or runner on third, ball in the gap/down the line, the 1B trails the runner to second for a potential throw from cutoff man or rundown situation.
