Purple Square With A 5 In It
I was browsing thru other teams lineups and I came across a few players with these purple squares and a white 5 in it. The little baseball knowledge that I have tells me that icon indicates a 5 tool player. I don't think I've noticed it before. Can someone confirm what this icon means. Thanks. The Positive Sports Podcast~~~Tough Times Don't Last, Tough People Do~~~Ignore The Negativity, Be The PositivityTags: None -

Rule 5 player, which means that he must be retained on the clubs 25 man roster. If they don't want him anymore, then he is returned to the club in which he was selected from.

I believe on the game, if you send the rule 5 guy down, he actually goes through waivers first before returning to the original team. So other teams are able to pick him up first and then the original team gets him if no one else makes a claim. At least that is what I believe happened to me on the bust of a pick I selected that one time. Maybe someone else can verify or refute this.Comment

Good to know. I had always thought that the player must immediately go back to his previous team rather than pass through waivers. Thanks for the info ENComment

No actually that is not how the rule is supposed to work. The way that the rule is supposed to work is that he is offered back first with half his contract paid for by the team that drafted him under the rule 5. If the original team doesn't want him back (due to the fact that even on the offer back he must be on the 25 man) then he is sent to the waiver wire, where the drafting team is no longer on the hook for the half salary or having to keep him on the 25 man.GM of the KC Royals in the OS Arbitration ThreadOriginally posted by theenginePlus, there are lots of illiterate Pro Bowlers. That is only if the player is traded to a new team first. The selected team has to waive them first. No actually that is not how the rule is supposed to work. So the situation he described was correct. If chosen in the Rule 5 draft, a player must be kept on the selecting team's 25-man major league roster for the entire season after the draft—he may not be optioned or designated to the minors. The selecting team may, at any time, waive the Rule 5 draftee. If a Rule 5 draftee clears waivers by not signing with a new MLB team, he must be offered back to the original team, effectively canceling the Rule 5 draft choice. Once a Rule 5 draftee spends an entire season on his new team's 25-man roster, his status reverts to normal and he may be optioned or designated for assignment.
Any player chosen in the Rule 5 draft may be traded to any team while under the Rule 5 restrictions, but the restrictions transfer to the new team. If the new team does not want to keep the player on its 25-man roster for the season, he must be offered back to the team of which he was a member when chosen in the draft.Ⓥ Boston Red Sox | Miami DolphinsComment
