Re: Lets talk player ratings!

great thread..... how exactly does "potential" work. i mean, shouldn there be a potential for every rating??

if a guy is currently a C overall, has C contact, D power, F fielding, but A potential. does that mean each rating category would bump 2 letter grades (c to a) if he reaches full potential ? meaning he would be, A contact, B power, C fielding at full potential???? or is it totally random how each aspect produces? this is my theory but i really dont know how progression is determined or works.

yeah, lol at the idea of drew being nearly as fast as crawford just because of some wacky stat. watch the two guys run and you tell me who's faster. rickey henderson wasn't the fastest guy in the league, but stole the most bases, so base stealing is not completely based on speed.

I'm generally a Howard defender, but this statement is very far from the truth.

Go to fangraphs, baseball-reference.com, and look up a sta called WAR. I'm not going to explain it here, but Howard is among the most over-rated players, and his contract is viewed as "almost as bad" as Vernon Wells.

Simply put, Howard needs to have 50 HR seasons in order to provide a ton of value.

You really should look at where Howard ranks among 1B's in WAR or any other "value stat".

My ratings are usually based on the last 2 seasons and the results were pretty good in the past.

Of course some things are weird sometimes if you edit stuff yourself because u can't edit managers and their decisions, playing time/platoons, how often players have green light and stuff so the right ratings sometimes have a wrong outcome what makes things really hard. Just an example: Stephen Drew is at least as fast as Carl Crawford (that's a fact btw) but he doesn't even steal more bases than Albert Pujols. How u wanna edit that? It's impossible. So u have to edit Drew that he is a) way to slow in the game or b) he steals way to many bags. So NOW it's pretty much impossible to edit the players the way that it results in let's say 90% plausible stats. You just can rate the players' skills perfectly but you can't influence how the game's using each player. I'd say NBA 2K11 is the only game were u can edit stuff the way that it is really close to real life.

BaseRunningAbilty and BR Aggressiveness have more to do with stealing and taking extra bases.

I am pretty sure the developers aren't positive as to how exactly potential and progression works. I would love to see potential removed for players that have at least 3 years of service time. By then, the potential is pretty apparent. From then on, training and age should be the only factors for progression. But that is just my personal wish list. It seems we will have a completely new system next year so here's hoping this stuff is more thoroughly ironed out.
