I love this game but jeesh I STINK at it!

I don't think there has ever been any game that has been as great or I've loved as much but I've stunk at as The Show. This year is no different than past games. I play the cpu and for a few innings it's all good, then the shellacking comes and they get a huge inning. Then as always I'm left swinging at nothing and getting crushed. I've put my hitting at rookie and contact but I still have a hard time putting up runs on the board (sad I know..LOL)

Anyone got any tips for an old man who loves the game but is simply terrible at it??

This is my first year with the show. I am 3-20 with the Reds in a franchise. I suck too but I cant help but play anything else!

Sorry, not a tip but know you are not alone.

I agree ODogg. I just suck at hitting. I am using the analog hitting and o can't get the feel for it. I am horrible at timing and horrible at swinging at pitches outside the strike zone. Hope someone can throw us some tips.

I would suggest lowering pitch speed to atleast 4 or even 3 and change the camera angle. Lowering pitch speed and camera angle, gives me more time to judge the pitch. I find catcher cam 9 to work the best. Also, ive lowered my difficulty for hitting one level lower than last year. Im now using veteran with zone hitting and have had better luck in terms of hitting. Im 14-13 with the Rockies in spring training so far.

i think the question really is where do you think you need to improve? ive been there, so i know what you guys are going through. however you start to catch onto tendencies, then you will have that "ah ha" moment.

what did it for me was to really start thinking baseball. sometimes its so simple we forget the most obvious stuff. like how does the pitcher pitch to your lineup? obviously he will pitch away and most likely walk your power guys, so be patient when they are at bat. your bottom of the lineup guys will see more strikes early into the count, so look for a location you can handle and wait till he throws there.

when you are pitching think about their lineup and how they expect you to pitch to them. walking is not the end of the world, its much better to give up a walk then to give them something they can hit. so dont give in if you aiming for the black and put something over the plate because you are in a 3 ball count.

think about those "bottom of the 9th" situations you used to come up when you were a kid. you have to think your way through them, same thing when you are playing this game. i think you will find that you will get "lucky" when you put yourself into a position to be lucky.

Re: I love this game but jeesh I STINK at it!

Practice mode is very helpful for Analog hitting and throwing.

Dropping the difficulty is a good start. If pitches are coming in too quickly for you, drop pitch speed 2-3 clicks. I'd also maybe look at dropping CPU Strike Frequency a click or two. This will help you see more balls outside the zone, and should help your timing.

Try one of the new camera angles. I'm a big fan of Catcher 4, and I've also created a Custom camera based off Wide Offset that provides a modified 2K11 view and I think really works well with Analog hitting.

Ok I know I asked this before, but when using analog batting, it does not seem to let me select power or contact swing...when the icons pop up for square or circle I press one but nothing happens.

There should be a noticeable rumble as a confirmation on your controller .

You have to select the swing type before the pitch of course.

                    4-12 here.
I feel 09 was the start of the super cpu, 10 was less and now 11 is the hardest.
Its cool though, the cpu is actually challenging in a baseball game.

Years ago it was too easy to master.

Don't use analog hitting. The buttons are easier. Also do timing hitting on rookie level. If you can't hit on those settings then...lol.

The key is being patient. Take pitches. The CPU will continue to throw out of the zone if you chase. It's a smart CPU. Now I'm not sure how many balls they throw on rookie level. It's probably less I'd assume.

I wouldn't tell people to just abandon Analog hitting. If you use Analog on Rookie, then it's just like Timing as you don't have to worry about moving the R-stick to the left or right. You can then move your way up from there, the more comfortable you get with the controls.

There's nothing wrong with Timing and if people want to use it, that's fine. But, I wouldn't dismiss Analog or Zone just because people are struggling. You can work your way out of those slumps.

If you really want to improve on your hitting here are 3 easy steps to do so.

                          1. Change to Catcher 9 view
                          2. Turn guess pitch and strike zones off, less you have to think and worry about and it will help you see release points and breaks better.
                          3. Only swing at the stuff right over the heart of the plate until you have 2 strikes. Let those ones that paint the corners go. When you get 2 strikes go to contact swing and protect. It will allow you to see alot more pitches and start to recognize them.

These three steps will im prove your hitting 10 fold. It has mine.

Lower the difficulty....or work on sliders (if practicing hasn't helped). I don't understand why people think they should agonize themselves instead of trying an "easier" level. I'm not a great hitter, so I moved it down to Veteran after trying to get consecutive games with hits. I would get 2-4 hits a game but none were solid hits. I hope to get the hang of the hitting to the point where I can move it back up to All Star level, but I won't be kicking myself should this never happen.

Re: I love this game but jeesh I STINK at it!

I just got my copy last night and I've never had so much fun being so bad at something. But I'm starting to get frustrated. Not at the game so much, but at myself for swinging at trash and taking fat pitches. I didn't even know I could change the speed of the pitch, or angles. And I don't understand what all the stuff is on the screen. Guess pitch? And then L3 seems to do something that's not explained anywhere (that I've seen, anyway.)

What I don't understand is why the manual is so barren (beyond controls) and there are no real walkthroughs explaining how to do things.

I just spent an hour practicing fielding and it seemed like even when I was directly under some flyballs, I'd drop them. Sometimes a weird wedge would display on the screen around where a flyball was going to land, and I couldn't figure out what it was, or where I was supposed to go, and I'd miss the ball completely. Sometimes while waiting for the pitch, arrows would display on the circle around my player that seemed to indicate I should move in or back, but I didn't understand why I was supposed to move, and inevitably I'd move in and the ball would get hit over my head.

There's nothing in the book that really explains RTTS. I don't understand how training really works, when you do it, how it affects your skills, etc. There are a lot of screens with bars/graphs and no explanations of what they are or what they mean, and the online Help has little to say. I really feel like the game is lacking either a tutorial or documentation explaining everything. It seems like the game is targeted to people who already know what all this stuff is. As someone new to the franchise, I'm having fun but feeling totally lost. Something tells me that I'm not going to be having fun a week from now if I can't figure out what I should be doing.
