What does baserunning ability actually do?

I know there has been lots of threads on this, but I couldn't find them. Like, if I have a guy with only 57 speed, but 96 baserunning ability (cause I do), what does that mean? Can I steal with him, or what?

Not sure if it helps with stealing though it would make sense. Probably wont help with stealing at 57 speed. But also I believe it has something to do with how you actually run the bases. For example I've seen on many occasions a runner over run a base and stick there leg out to try and stay on it. I would assume that wont happen the higher your base running ability.

I'm assuming it would help with a base stealers ability to get a good "jump" so you could have a lower speed but your jump is so good that it compensates. It would also work vice versa, your speed is decent but your guy sucks at timing his jump so his success rate suffers.

I also think it is the basis of the decision making for AI baserunning. Aggressiveness and Ability.

Baserunning ability is equal to steal success pretty much regardless of speed.
While speed is a factor...it is not the dominating factor in stealing.(thankfully, there have been plenty of very spedy guys who are not the best base stealers and those that are not so fast..but are fantastic base stealers(maybe not plentiful...but excellent at it...Kevin McReynolds is an EXCELLENT example of this....1988 21 steals with 0 caught stealing....he was quick..but far from the fastest guy in the league)
Speed is more for baserunning(other than stealing) and defensive play.

So would I be safe stealing with a 57 speed player who has 96 baserunning? He led AA in steals by far, but that's sim...I'm talking about in an actual game.

Does it have any affect on line drives that go for hits? Sometimes I see my guys go back towards their original base even though it falls for a hit. Maybe the better base runners take off? Anyways, another excellent example of good baserunner but not a lot of speed is Chase Headley.

You know....I never really looked for that.
I'm going to guess...yes...guys with better baserunning ability are smarter on the paths and "know" when to go and not hesitate so much. That's a guess though. I'm sure someone will test it now!

Re: What does baserunning ability actually do?

Interesting topic, and I will add 2 cents to this. I am hopeful this was an anomoly, but it would be a bit disturbing if the Base Running Ability was tied to this type of programming.

I was playing in Fenway, and there was a runner at first and second with 1 out. The runner at second had a BRA that was fairly low, and the batter hit a fly ball to the wall in left center. I could see the ball icon about 3/4 of the way up the wall, so I knew that I would be having to play the ball off the carom. The runner, as he should, went 1/2 way to third, and when the ball hit the wall, he took off and of course, scored easily. No problem.

Fast forward to the 7th inning, no outs runner on first. This guy (I cannot remember who it was from the Marlins) had a really high BRA. Another ball hit to left center and again, the ball was going to be fairly high off the wall, as indicated by the spinning ball marker...

The runner immediately took off from first like a flash, as though he "knew" the ball was off the wall. Now, if the "Baserunning Ability" at a high level gives the runner some omnipotent vision as to where the ball will land, and they can run like the wind accordingly, I have a problem with that. If the steal was on, and the guy just happened to go, and keep on going once the ball was off the wall, I guess I am okay with that.

The off thing is, in all the games I have played of The Show, I have yet to have a runner break for second on a steal or a hit and run, and have the batter line out to an infielder, and then throw to first for the easy double play. Never. EVER.

I am not sure what the baserunning ability algorithm is, but seeing the future should not be a part of it.

i might be wrong, but i thought ability was how you ran the bases. like you have better reaction time, best way to describe is if you start for a triple and decide to run back to 2nd, sometimes there is that delay where your runner hesitates.

base running aggressiveness, was your reaction when stealing. meaning you get a better jump with a higher rating.

of course i could be wrong

I have seen this happen on occasion. It's certainly not an everyday occurance but it does happen. I'm sure others have seen it too.

Just tried stealing a base with the guy with 57 speed and 96 baserunning (and fairly high aggressiveness), and I EASILY beat the throw.

In my RTTS, the guy leading my AA league in stolen bases has very similar ratings to that.

Hmmm... Roll of the dice algorithm for the jump the runner gets apparently increased as the BRA number goes up.
