    Clutch Rating

I play Manager Mode.....what does this attribute actually pertain too.....is it the ability to hit with people in Scoring Position or is it tied into getting a hit when the game is near the end and on the line......just wanted to know because I play with the Mets and Angel Pagan has like a 91 rating....but all my hitters have Clutch ratings in the 60's besides Jason bay who's is in the 70's.......Thanks!!!

    Re: Clutch Rating

I'm curious about the clutch ratings too.

Searching the past threads, Knight mentioned these act as modifiers for certain ratings (contact & power for batters, X/9 ratings for pitchers were mentioned) in some pressure situations. The amount of rating cut/boot is not exactly known it appears, but looks like it is only nominal; you don't want Bill Pecota to suddenly become Barry Bonds in clutch situations so nominal effects only make sense... That much info I gathered so far.

Thanks for giving your input on that Nomo....it would be good to know because I may setup my lineup lil differently...if this plays a big part in what happens

I don't think the rating has a very big effect. Otherwise it would be very noticeable and we wouldn't be wondering if it has any effect at all in this thread here haha. Over the course of season, maybe the player with high clutch gets an edge several times, maybe a dozen... I think that's the kind of small effect we would be talking about. I'm guessing though. IRL it's actually questionable if clutch abilities exist at all.

There is no doubt that clutch exists in real life. The doubt stems in whether clutch exists in the pros and to what extent, as all pros have already proven to be clutch else they wouldn't be pros. That being said, I would love to know how and when it works on the game. It is my opinion, and based on zero facts whatsoever, that the "when" is discernible by the vibrating controller. It seems to happen in what would usually be considered a clutch situation. As to the effect, who knows? I have never been able to garner enough data to make that kind of call, even anecdotally.

Clutch and choking in a sense of having confidence in their ability do exist and can even see it when you and your varsity teammates play (LOL), but as you implied I was talking about MLB players.

Some things are never explained in detail, even in the online manual. Clutch ratings are those...

Clutch situations exist. Clutch performances exist. But clutch abilities (the ability to repeatedly perform well in clutch situations) does not exist.

Oh god not again. Speaking of which, God is a myth. He doesn't exist. God is intangible, and as such, can't possibly exist. Clutch is an intangible, and as such, can't possibly exist. Hustle also can't exist. I give up.

Back to the game, does anyone have any other ideas how and when clutch comes into play?

                    Re: Clutch Rating

My assumption would be a 'clutch situation' would be moments that the controller is vibrating in a pulse like fashion. It makes sense to me that they would match up but it's simply a guess on my part.

Off topic: My 2 cents on if being clutch is an actual thing is that you either have the mental fortitude to preform in intense situations or you don't. Nobody is elevating their game because it's the ninth inning of a tied game but I do feel that some can't handle the pressure and struggle.

Also, talk of religion is forbidden, even if it just part of a straw man argument.

                      Re: Clutch Rating

I was wondering how much the clutch rating was playing a role in the game. What I did is I downloaded the latest SCEA roster ( as of today may 23rd) and I set all RedSox players ( those at MLB level for an exhibition game) and I set them all to 99. Clutch Pitching for pitchers and Clutch for position players. I did the opposite with the Yankees, everybody to zero. I then let them play in an Exhibition game CPU vs CPU.

1st game : Redsox won 8-5 ( one 5 points inning in the 8th followed by a 3 points inning by the Yankees). But nothing special other than that.

2nd game: game still ongoing and it is 4-4 in 10th.

I know this is a really small sample but I still don't understand how clutch is involved. Is it only for real players and not CPU ??

If some want the roster to do more extensive testing just let me know !!!

It's not a result from gameplay (which most of us are really concerned about), but in "simmed" games there appears to be small but significant effect between the clutch rating and BA with RISP:

                        http://www.operationsports.com/forum...post2042378004

So if the devs actually tried to produce similar effects in the gameplay with the clutch rating, it probably will have an effect of less than +/- 10% in batting average. So the best clutch hitter who normally hits .300 would hit .330 with RISP. I guess that's a huge difference....

But personally I cannot really feel that strong an effect.

Can we open a "Clutch MLB The Show" Category in these forums? Or, at least a tutorial on how to use the search feature to see the thousands of clutch responses that amount to one single fact; SCEA is not telling us what, if anything, clutch does.

As far as OS is concerned, the devs words are God's words (after all they are the creator of the Show......), and mods & members who know the devs are the messengers. And Knight the Messenger got words from the devs, so I believe some info have leaked through about the clutch rating.

But I agree that OS should have a sticky or something that explains each of these attributes in detail, something along the line of what Bobhead did in the slider subforum. That would be handy. Tough part would be too make sure the info is really true. Each member has his or her (is there any women member here by the way??) own theory, so...

                              This. This right here.

Look at MLB clutch ratings. Players in the top 1/3 one year are often in the bottom 1/3 the next year, despite having similar season stat lines.

Clutch rating for pitchers seems to be an "overall" type rating, I'm not sure about batters.
