Learning to direct the stick left/right when appropriate probably took a couple of months to fully master, but it's definitely worth the trouble. It's so rewarding to poke an outside slider over a corner IF with an intentionally late swing. When I check the swing info and see perfect PCI placement on a hit like that, I'm as happy as if I had just crushed a HR.
You are right on about the satisfaction of moving the ball around the park. I am still not great at it, but I am getting better at covering 'middle-in' or 'middle-away' in situational hitting situations. I am not able to read and react mid pitch, I just have to protect that part of the plate rather than looking for something down the middle. I played 3 games last night; first time I was able to play more than 1 game in a sitting in months. Analog hitting brings so much to this game. I had no idea the devs put so much into analog hitting. I always assumed it was just like zone hitting, except you use the stick not the buttons.

Hold R2 and flick up or down on the right stick to influence flyball/groundball with analog. Just found out a month ago and it made analog way more fun for me. I've used it since jump street and love it. I always wanted to time a pitcher in a baseball game, and now I can.

While this is great for center swinging, adjusting for inside/outside becomes kinda awkward....

I'm now hitting at HOF and I definitely want to make that adjustment, but I never feel comfortable or fast enough moving my thumb from bottom right to top left...
Yeah, I just hold my controller normally.

When batting, would you say you keep a fairly firm grip on the right stick?

I know early on this year I had some trouble with thumb speed or bat speed(whatever you want to call it..), but it was because I was holding the stick with my thumb the same way I would hold it to pitch.

When I pitch I keep a pretty solid grip on the stick for the sake of accuracy, but with hitting, precise accuracy really doesn't matter. On the other hand, speed is very important, and I'm only able to be fast with a light grip and more of a less deliberate flicking motion.

If you're putting more pressure on the stick than you have to, the extra force you're using to hold the stick can slow you down just enough to make a difference.

thats a good tip. I lightend up on the stick for hitting a while ago and definatly can get around on more fastballs.

My homerun swings always feel very soft and slow; this must be why.

As far as how hard I hold my stick, I do similar to what you wrote... holding it lightly makes easier to check swing as well which is important given how often I end up reacting to borderline pitches.

I think my problem of moving PCI laterally, specifically turning inside as a RHB, is that I cannot just move my thumb to move the stick to left... I actually also have to turn my wrist in the same direction to commit, because when I hold the controller normally, my thumb won't "extend" in that direction, where as turning outside as a RHB is easier because you can move your thumb naturally to do so. Down the middle, I have to do a bit of both... moving wrist and thumb. The additional wrist movement makes my swing a bit slower I feel...

Re: My return to Analog Hitting

Going left/right is just so nice...Timing and Zone, I don't think I have this kind of thing.

Today I played WAS(Me) @ CHC(CPU) and was able to turn on a high inside fastball from Garza with Ankiel for a monster HR shot to right.
