Tiger Stadium

I miss the old girl. From her overhanging deck in right field, the very short backstop, the deep center, those giant light towers peeping down at you and those Blue and Orange seats, and from the outside she looked like an old battleship. what a place to play, video game I mean.
When ever I got a new baseball game I would always check out Tiger Stadium and looked forward to playing there. I bought the classic stadium pack yesterday but no Tiger Stadium.

I remember one guy saying that sitting in the front row behind the back stop you could spit your gum out and hit the batter, you would get a real appreciation of what a great change up looks like, because you cannot hit a good change up, great spot for the fans to watch the game.

Maybe someday well get her back in the game. What a cathedral !

MLB Network recently had their Top 9 Stadiums of ALL TIME, and Tiger Stadium was in there. They are:

9. Shibe Park, Philadelphia
8. Astrodome, Houston
7. Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles
6. Tiger Stadium, Detroit
5. Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore
4. Ebbets Field, Brooklyn
3. Wrigley Field, Chicago
2. Old Yankee Stadium, New York
1. Fenway Park, Boston

Well lets see, we can play at 4 of them already in the game itself. To be leaving out Tiger Stadium from The Show is a glaring void, and a huge mistake. I have a set of 2 seats from the park in my office, purchased when they started the first round of destroying the park. My wife wasn't pleased when I spent the money, but I wasn't about to let that chance slip by.

WOW thanks canyonblue , from watching the video link , my memory serves me well on my quote about the gum and the changeup. I have not seen that program in many years. I used to have it recorded on vhs back in the day, that program is fantastic.

I agree with you too, that it is a shame Tiger Stadium is not in the game. Those seats are a real gem, cudos to you. I am from Canada, Newfoundland actually and I went to Tiger Stadium to see my first live baseball game, that was my first trip outside of our country so that will tell you what Tiger Stadium meant to me.

I could almost guarantee that if you put it to a vote for "what retro stadium would you like to see in The Show", it would either be Tiger Stadium or Ebbet's Field.
Both have a sort of cult following(if that's possible for a stadium!).

I'd vote Ebbet's first...but Tiger a close second.

I think this would be a really good idea. I think alot of people (including myself) not only buy The Show because it is an excellent baseball game, but because the dev team is one of the few that has a connection to and listens to the consumers. If they were to put up a poll to vote for an extra classic stadium for '13, it would not only make the game THAT much better, but it would also help the fans of the series to feel like they had more of an impact on development. Win-Win

Yes, I agree whole heartly, because ballparks play such an important role in the outcome of the game really. Hockey, football, basketball, all have the same dimensions no matter where you play, but baseball is a different story all together, no two fields are alike and they all have their little quirks and so on. For example, imagine when a rookie left fielder plays in Boston for the first time, look what he has to deal with. And as for Tiger Stadium, imagine the right fielder waiting for the fly ball at the warning track only to be taken away by the overhanging deck.

So you see how important ballparks are and the past ones should not be forgotton for that very reason, they have so much character.

I disagree. And when you sit in one of those old parks and watch a game, it all makes sense.

I don't new modern flashy circus tricks to entertain me trying to watch a ball game. Those old stadiums just suck you in.

I'll be shocked if you are over the age of 30. That's life I guess, but some stadiums have a look, a feel, and such historic moments that it really is a shame to replace them. I've haven't spent too much time on the East Coast, but I'm glad I got to see Yankees vs. Red Sox (Pedro vs. Clemens by the way) in the old Yankee Stadium. Since, I've seen a couple games in the new Yankee stadium. It is nice...very clean and modern, but not the same. Sorry.

Personally I sit on both sides of the fence. I love old parks and reading about them, watching old clips, and the simplicity of them compared to today's standards. Nostalgia is a strong emotion though...

On the other hand, I'm a civil engineer and my company has done structural engineering on baseball stadiums (Miller Park), football stadiums (Bengals Stadium), and olympic stadiums (Beijing bird's nest) so I love the modern efforts and appreciate progression.

Ultimately, just because something is historic doesn't mean you can't appreciate it while moving on. Such is life! If we all lived on nostalgia then we should all be driving Model T's and living in straw huts.



p.s.- I wish Tiger Stadium was in The Show. I always loved that park and the right field porch.

I'm in Love with the Stadium. I only got to go once when I was like 3 years old, but I can briefly remember walking through the Tiger Plaza and seeing the green grass when I got to my seat. It's a real shame what happened to the stadium, they way it sat vacant and they way it was torn down. If you talk to the people who knew everything that happened, they would say "It wasn't torn down, it was murdered" by Mike Illitch and Detroit.

Ernie Harwell was told to raise X amount of dollars and they would save parts of the stadium and turn it into a great tourist attraction and revenue source for the city of Detroit. Well they would raise up the money, then the city would ask them for more. Again and again. And soon enough, the whole park is gone. Now it just sits there with a chain link fence around it. You know even as it sat empty for 10 years, they still paid for people to come in maintain the field.

It's such a unique place. The way it's built, it's like sealed off and what is inside is a mystery. When I first took interest of it around 2005 and 2006, me and my dad would drive past on the way downtown and I was fascinated. I'm big into abandoned buildings, etc. (why I love Detroit) so Tiger Stadium was just fascinating to me. I just wanted to walk inside, see the field, the multicolored seats, everything.

BUTTT you can get on the field today. I know some guys who have played some pickup games there. I am hopefully going to get on the field this summer and play a little bit. I can't describe how amazing it would be to play on the same field as all of the greats in baseball history. Everybody from Babe Ruth, to Hank Greenberg, to Alex Rodriguez have stood in that batters box. Everybody from Ty Cobb to Ken Griffey Jr. have patrolled that centerfield. There's nothing like it. If I can get on the field and play, I will never forget it the rest of my life.

Sorry for the long post but I love this park too much. If anybody is interested, I have quite a few videos/pictures of the stadium during the past 10 years (and while it was in use) that are really great. I've collected them from various sites/forums over the years. Over on another hardcore baseball site, there is a 200 page thread about the stadium so everything you could ever imagine is in there.

Mannnnn, a nice pickup game in the sunset on the same field as everybody great baseball player who ever lived. The skyline in the back (behind home plate) nothing can compare.

Its weird (and sad) to drive to Comerica Park and not pass by Tiger stadium. I used to look forward to seeing it when I went to a game.
