He Who Must Not Be Named has a theory on the "Online Pass" and why the online portion of the game is not turned on:

"As was the case last year SCEA currently does not plan to turn on the online servers for MLB 12: The Show until Tuesday morning. That’s important to keep in mind when early reviews roll out – they will not have played online at all in the public environment and potentially even unable to evaluate Diamond Dynasty mode – and also a bummer for those who choose to pick up the game at midnight as they won’t even be able to play online immediately but instead must wait until that morning/afternoon.

Concern is warranted as online performance has been the biggest weakness of the series and the decision is one that won’t instill immediate confidence. Not only will the early reviews be unable to take online into consideration but now with the “Online Pass” the company absolutely has to finally deliver improvements and bring it up to the standard consumers expect in order to justify the program."

Once again, I agree with what is said, I just disagree with how it is said.

I see no problem with a company, any company, in this case SCEA, not turning the online portion of their game on until, you know, its actually officially released.

I believe reviewers have access to the online portion of the game. General public not until Tuesday.

I know right...?

It would make sense to me to leave the Online Servers off until official launch to keep those who received the game early (beit this game, MW3, BF3, etc...) from exploiting that portion of the game, leveling up or boosting before the game was actually even out.

I guess not turning them on before launch day is really just to make sure the reviewers do not slag the game for sub-par online gameplay..

I'm sure "He Who Must Not Be Named" would complain if it was the other way around too.

They aren't obligated to turn anything on before the game is commercially available. I'm sure if the servers come on before then, "He" will take the credit for lighting a fire under SONY, lol.

I'm sure "He Who Must Not Be Named" would complain if it was the other way around too.

Even if the servers were turned on they always reset everything on release day so no one is way ahead of everyone else. I still do not know what the big deal is about to be honest.

He should spend more time covering what is interesting, and not tabloid like sensationalism.

Pessimism reigns supreme though I suppose.

And as far as the games "weakness", yes it has not been the hottest. But most sports games out there have not been too great online either as far as lag, if one is to compare strictly online.

It's just The Show does so much of everything else so much better than most sports games offline, it makes the online that much more glaring.

Didn't know the game had a online pass this year but doesn't bother me. Also doesn't bother me if online won't be on till Tuesday, I'm not much of an Online guy but will be trying it out frequently throughout the year.

Just like we knew about the league restrictions to be lifted long before (at the CE) the "article", the he tried to say he put pressure on you guys.

Well, I have nothing against the writer and the points that he's making (particularly like how the "reviewers" who received early copies cannot evaluate the online portion of the game... that could be a valid claim...), but his Show articles sound often silly only because he adds stuff just for the sake of adding a negative implication.

It's as if he is writing about his ex he's still madly in love with, but trying so hard to find her (minute) flaws to convince that she wasn't worthy of his efforts all these years....
