158 pitch complete game

I lost 8 to nothing on hall of fame default sliders the starters energy level was completely gone and his confidence meter full and still was able to throw strikes consistently.

Google says to that pitcher: Join the club. It's not as rare as you seem to think.

Tom Cheney.

Who you say?...

Only the MLB record holder for K's in a game.

I just posted this a few days ago in the MLB section...

16 IP....258 pitches....21 K's...

Re: 158 pitch complete game

I've started a thread about this before. And there are several other threads opened on this topic. Unfortunately, it may seem unrealistic to you as I had the same reaction. I was venting on here somewhat about this not being a realistic, sim oriented baseball game. However, after some deliberation, I realized it happens. Now it shouldn't happen once a week, but it does happen.

Re: 158 pitch complete game

If the pitcher wasn't throwing a no-hitter then it should be an extremely rare occurrence, especially in this day and age where pitch counts are taken into consideration by every single team. on Wikipedia (not the best source, I know) search "pitch count" and you get a chart that shows that there were 40 instances were a starter threw greater than 125 pitches in a game last year - that's 0.82% of all starts made last year. If you include 2009 and 2010, 0.62% of all starts resulted in the starter throwing greater than 125 pitches.

This article is also a very good read, helps reinforce the point that the game has changed quite a bit over the past 30 years.

And to just reinforce the point, per baseball reference there have only been three instances since 2005 where a pitcher has thrown 140 or more pitches (0.0078%), and only 51 instances where a pitcher has thrown 130 or more pitches (0.13%).

Re: 158 pitch complete game

It's just amazing how things have changed, but I guess I'm an old school type who's been accustomed to seeing a starter pitch deep into the game, so contrary to the OP I feel very weird when a starter gets pulled only after 100 pitch. My jaw drops (yes it actually did... no) seeing what happened to Strasburg. Pitching motion being so violent and unnatural to how human physiology works, to a certain extent we must accept that *all* pitchers will become damaged product at some point, regardless of how careful they are being used.

As for the pitch limit, I think that should be controlled by how the CPU manager handles the pitching stuff. Those high pitch count games by starters happen in the game often when there is a huge lead, and the starter is cruising.
