Official 1995-1998 Classic Roster Project
Before I even begin with the information, I would like to truly thank the roster and CAP creators who have been able to give me a huge head start in this project. If not for all of the excellent pre-created players for me to build off of, this project would not be happening right now. These guys are true fans of the game.
Now, on to the good stuff! My plan is to begin with the 1996 season, and then do the 1997, 1998, and 1995 season in that order. I will be making full 25 man rosters for each team for now. I have not worried about minor league players yet, but with the ability to transfer roster files from year-to-year I may make that my project for next season. As for the details, see my FAQ section below:
Spoiler
Q: What can I expect from these rosters? A: My overall goal is to provide the most authentic, realistic classic rosters to the best of my ability. This does not mean they will be, but it means I will do whatever I can to try and make them. Some highlights of this include: * Accurate player ratings in every category, with the help of ratings guides and my recent purchase of "The Neyer/James Guide to Pitchers" I should be able to provide a semi-accurate representation of every players skills and abilities. And yes, the pitchers should all have their correct velocities and pitch-type arsenals so long as the book is correct. (And it is) * Accurate accessories, cleats, bats, gloves, numbers, etc... I have been going over baseball cards, google image search, etc... to find pictures of players from each specific year. Some players changed gear from game to game, so I went with what they commonly wore during each respective season. * At least a decent likeness for each player. Obviously the bigger the name, the bigger the treatment in most cases, but even the backups should at least be passable appearance wise. * Authentic stances and pitching motions. I will be honest and admit this is where I struggle the most, so don't expect each and every one to be perfect, but I have been using the tools at my disposal to try and match most players up with the correct (or close to) motions. I may miss some, but any constructive feedback upon the release that can help will be appreciated and further enhance the experience! * Correct height and weight, proper positions, and throwing/batting handedness. Q: At what point in the season do these rosters begin? A: At basically no point. I toyed with the notion of using the rosters at playoff time, or on opening day, but with transactions you have some players on teams then that they barely played 20 games for. I have decided instead to keep players on the team they spent the majority of the season with. For example, if Cecil Fielder played 110 games with Detroit, and say 50 with the Yanks, you can bet he will be with Detroit. Now for a disclaimer: I did this in my 1996 season, and I had one duplicate player (E. Murray) in the group. I have caught one already (John Burkett -Tex/Fla) but may possibly let one more slip by. In the event if this would happen and you do catch it (IF it happens) just let me know. Since this is an easy fix, I haven't let it worry me or ruin the experience and neither should you. I also added some players (Garciaparra, Andruw Jones, Rolen, etc...) that played 30 or so games for their club, but weren't in their rookie year yet. The other options were lesser known players who played the same amount (or less games) so I brought the star power up instead. Q: But how do you account for speed/arm strength/accuracy and other things that are hard to rate? A: Again, this may not be 100% perfect, but for defense I try to look at fielding percentages and assists (for OF's) to determine the arm strength and fielding ability. It isn't fool-proof, but it's a good start. As for speed, stolen bases help. If a guy stole 25 bases one year, then only 5 total the next two, but 25 again a few years later, it doesn't mean he was slower. It just means his team didn't use him for that purpose or his season was cut short. I also look at SB's and times caught stealing for the steal ability rating and BR aggressiveness rating. It may not be a perfect system, but it is a consistent one. Q: What about Tampa Bay and Arizona? Now what, genius? A: I got this. Obviously no one can figure out a perfect solution for this dilemma, but I will more than likely create generic, average to below average rated players for each team. Not sure what else to since you can't exclude them in franchise mode from what I know. Q: So baumy, when can we expect these rosters you jagaloon? A: The short answer - Don't. I promised myself, that no matter how bad I want these, I won't rush them. I run 3 businesses, exercise at least 90 minutes a day, have ADD, and still try to have a somewhat normal social life. However, the amount of work I can achieve in an hour is pretty impressive. I also don't want to get burnt out on these, since this is almost therapeutic for me and I feel that being in a hurry will hurt the accuracy I am shooting for. Q: Do you really intend to give us 4 seasons worth of classic rosters? A: Damn right I do! My plan is to finish the 1996 season, upload it, and then just basically move players where they need to be, change the age, edit a few attributes, and see if there were any accessory changes before creating a few new players for that year. Q: Why are you pissing your life away doing something like this? A: Because this is what baseball fans do! And these were some of the greatest years in baseball history in my opinion, mostly due to nostalgia, but 1996 did set a record number of HR's hit in the MLB and you can't look me square in the eyes and say "Naw man, I don't think it would be all that cool to bust out the teal Mariners jerseys and let young A-Rod and The Kid run wild while Randy Johnson brings that triple digit junk." And these also, at least in my opinion, are a great way to honor some of the players of the past. A way for some of the legends to live forever, so to speak. Q: Is there anything you would like to add before beginning? A: Yeah, just enjoy these. Truthfully, I am doing these because I myself want them, but baseball is the greatest sport on earth and I know how much other fans would love to relive seasons from their childhood. I am not perfect, and my rosters probably won't be either, but as long as people enjoy them as much as I will, I'm happy! Season Info - Rosters, Award Winners, All Stars

Also, if you have a good A-Rod (and even Jeter if possible) you would be willing to share, I'd love to include them.
