MLB The Show 22 Roster Project: Fidelity to Reality

    I'm excited for this one

I am officially announcing my MLB The Show 22 roster project: Fidelity to Reality. I began working on this project back in MLB 20 as I tried to develop a system that would best replicate real life statistics in-game. I worked on developing a system based on a number of statistics and metrics (will be fully described in a later post) to determine more accurate player attributes and ratings. I eventually deployed it on a couple of teams in MLB 21 (Chicago Cubs and Colorado Rockies) in a small roster project, and I was very happy with how they turned out. Following a little fine tuning, I am now ready to deploy the full system on a 30-team scale this season.

So what makes this project unique? How is it any different than the TrueSim project or others out there?

    Features
-Different attribute values will be determined by a variety of real life metrics. E.g. batting average will be determining "contact" ratings while K% determines "vision". There's nothing terribly unique about that, HOWEVER, I have taken this a step further and have tested a multitude of different ratings values in-game to determine what values correspond with what real life statistics.
For example, the league average batting average is around .250-.255. In-game, a player w/ roughly a 60 in "contact" rating will hit around .250-.255. The purpose is to not just give the player an accurate ratings value by comparison to the rest of the league, but it is to also perfectly replicate his level of play in real life in the game
-When I say I go deep into statistics and metrics, I mean it. Every single attribute can be extrapolated from a real world value. The only one I am unable to assign a metric to is "arm strength" for IFs as, sadly, there is not a single metric available that is available to the public that can be used to correlate its value

-Unlike other projects, I have a committed focus to having the deepest minor league rosters available. Instead of settling for just a few of every team's top prospects and then sprinkling in a bunch of filler, my roster will have every team's top 30 prospects. This makes franchise WAY more in depth and fun for the hardcore players and especially for my rebuild fans out there.

-Alongside the sheer number of prospects available, I have also developed a robust system for rating them. Gone are the days of sheer "eye tests" or "gut feelings" or relying on the minimal information that MLB pipeline provides to baseball fans. Prospects will be rated according to the scouting reports available on ProspectsLive.com. If you haven't checked them out, you really should. The sheer amount of effort and detail they put in is really incredible. These prospects will all have more accurate and reasonable potentials as well.

    Call for Assistance
Now admittedly, I am not as far along with this project as I was hoping. I am a current medical student, and well, that takes its toll. In addition to that, this project is a literal behemoth and cannot be completed by one person (it is upwards of 200-250 hours of work). I am looking for additional persons to help out on different parts of this process.

ANY HELP is sincerely appreciated. Even if you can only knock out a couple hours of work, that would add up over time and help this project get done at a more rapid pace.

So here's what I could use for assistance:
-MLB stat retriever (I have a pretty good grasp on this aspect, but extra help would always be appreciated)

-Someone to work through all the team rosters and come up with a list of 93 players per team for editing (This actually takes more time than you think, so cutting that time out of the process would be exceptionally helpful)

-Prospect information gatherer (read scouting reports and enter necessary scouting values into spreadsheet)(Will likely require patreon access to Prospects Live's website: ~$5 or something its pretty affordable if you're really into prospects)

-A chief roster editor (Someone to put in the time to grind out the edits once the actual game comes out. Would be helpful so I can keep the focus on getting the information for the rest of the teams that aren't finished by release date)

-A chief player creator (You will not need to worry about ratings, but I will need someone to find necessary biographical info and create likeness for upwards of a couple hundred players--although we will try to keep that number as minimal as possible)

Anyone interested please message me! Twitter would be the best place to get a hold of me via DM @ViatorLion10 as I am not always checking my messages on here. But if you have no other options, go ahead here as well.

Leave any comments and feedback here. Ask questions. Whatever you want. I'm curious what everyone thinks about this idea and if y'all are excited about it.

FanGraphs should be your best friend for this project! Their prospects lists can be downloaded into a csv file that you can open up in Excel instead of manually inputting all the data. The only downside is that they are only about half way done with the team reports at this point. It will probably drag on a bit passed opening day. But they usually have reports on ~40 or so prospects per team. Eric Longenhagen's approach to scouting is a little bit more focused on data than breaking down each player's frame and swing, but it is very accessible.

Sort of unrelated question: are you planning on doing pitch edits for your set?
    Chicago Cubs
    Michigan Wolverines

    Thanks Peyton. #18

I'm using fangraphs for a lot of stats, but not so much the prospect info. Too much of it is very basic and not enough in depth. But thanks for the suggestion!

And the answer to your question in abso-freaking-lutely. Fresh pitch edits for all MLB players. And they're gonna be goooooood. I promise

Re: MLB The Show 22 Roster Project: Fidelity to Reality

What I could use most for this project is someone who specializes in player creation. With the news that rosters are gonna run all the way to A ball, this will likely drive down the total number of players that need to be created so it shouldn't be too overwhelming if anyone wants to help me out.
