Franchise Mode "House" rules. What do you use?

Go ahead and let's hear what house rules you use to help make franchise mode more difficult and challenging to rebuild a team. Things like how you handle free agency, trading, etc. In need to implement some rules to help make a rebuild better. Thank you!

    - I wait until the cpu signs a free agent before I allow myself to sign anyone when starting a franchise.

    - I limit myself to three trades each season. I also only trade for players that are on the trade block.

    - I don't do contract extensions during the season since the cpu doesn't sign anyone to contract extensions during the season.

I only trade my players to a team that really needs the position that I'm trying to trade.

Pretty much same. I won’t sign anyone until cpu does. I’ll only trade through the trade block.

These are some good rules. I normally do your first rule with any franchise mode

I think all cpu management is terrible so I manage it all myself. Every Sunday in season. I just skim through lineups/rotations and edit things myself. I also go through real life transactions and say Elly de la cruz gets called up irl, I'll call him up in season.

              1. I don’t make a trade until the AI does
              2. I don’t dip into the Free Agent pool until the AI does, unless you lose a player through waivers.
              3. I don’t worry about trades the AI make’s regardless of how stupid they might be
              4. If I can trade a peanut butter sandwich for Mike Trout I will.

              I just play ball.

I only trade players using the trade finder.

I only trade for CPU players who are on the trade block.

I only trade my players with CPU by putting them on trade block, and using trade finder for the top 3 interested teams

No, I haven't noticed it being the same teams. I feel the longer you keep them on the block too, the interested teams change periodically. May be dependent if one of the top interested teams made a roster change and no longer need that position.

For spring training, I follow the CPU lead when it comes to pitching. 3 innings pitched maximum for statrters, and 1 inninng only for relievers. After 20 spring traing games, then I manage the staff and bullpen the way I do during the regular season.

Re: Franchise Mode "House" rules. What do you use?

My self imposed rules are a little more complicated.

First season I don't sign a free agent until a cpu team signs a free agent. Not a big deal because there aren't any great players as free agents to start the franchise.

                      Trades are more complicated.

1 - All trades must have equal number of players on cpu team and my team. 1 for 1. 2 for 2. 3 for 3.

2 - Single player trades must be at the same position as the cpu player or position of need. For example I try to acquire a third baseman from a cpu team. The cpu team has C, 1B, SP as positions of need. I can offer one player who is either 3B, C, 1B or SP.

3 - Multi player trades must include a player on the cpu team's trading block and no additional player can be higher overall than the player on the trading block. For the player on the trading block I can offer a player at the same position or a position of need.

Second player I'm acquiring - if he is on the trading block or at a position of need then the same rules apply as player one. If not on the trading block or position of need then I can only offer a player at the same position.

Third player must either be on the trading block or a position of need and same rules as player one apply.

Also I cannot trade a player on my team with durability less than 50. This dates back many years to when the cpu didn't recognize low durability as a negative.

Requiring same position or position need ensures the cpu team gets a player they need. Requiring same number of players restricts the ability to rip off the cpu. You can make some trades but you have to give something to get something and there are a lot of players you simply can't acquire as is the case IRL.

I also begin my franchise with the lowest payroll team in the NL Central which this years was Cincinnati. In my current franchise - Cincinnati relocated - playing every game from start to finish I'm 61-71 if that gives you an idea how difficult these restrictions are. Low payroll also limits ability to acquire player be it via trade or free agency.

I added a couple of more.

I don't use sponsors to raise my budget. Whatever I'm given is what I work with. I understand it may go up naturally anyways so I don't boost it.

I won't sign anyone in Free Agency who has a Red reaction. For example, in my most recent off season, there a couple of players I was interested in signing, however, they were not interested because I wasn't a playoff contender. So I didn't attempt to sign. I only limit this to free agency, not trading.

None. 50% of my reason for playing and enjoyment of the game is using The Show as a GM Simulator. So while I wish that it was both better and deeper, it is what it is. If I don't or can't do my best to build my team, then it strips all of the fun away for me. I'm just not able to lie to myself or pretend.
Anyone who claims to be a fan of two teams in the same pro sport is actually a fan of none.

Re: Franchise Mode "House" rules. What do you use?

For the trade deadline I only usually trade for players on the block or for older/expiring contract players on rebuilding teams or teams out of playoff contention.

I just try to do things that make some sense and not intentionally rip off the CPU.

I also don't go crazy signing free agents. Maybe one major long term deal a year.

Playing as the budget minded A's I often go for free agents who don't have any other offers.
