I always use one of the rosters they release before they start messing with ratings. They tend to get a little out of hand once they start tinkering with them. I've seen a player have a really good, or really bad month and get 6 or 7 points added or subtracted to their overall rating. Given I do think some guys got shafted on their ratings this season to begin with. Carlos Rodon for example fell from a 93 to a 77 after one bad year where he was hurt during the few starts that he did make. But to sum it up it really just depends if you want to start a franchise with default ratings or not.

I guess I get a little confused by the roster updates. Aren’t their people that post updates daily or weekly in the vault? I started my franchise a week ago.

Yes but those aren't the official rosters. People wait for the official rosters because they can add real scans, statistics, audio, etc. People's rosters in the vault just have caps.

Cycloniac's team does the best job with everything. "The TrueSim Roster Project" is in the Roster section of this site.

His is very good only issue is they come out like half way through the baseball season usually

I believe he said they're making better progress this year and expect it to be out this month.

Page 16, 5th post down (Rosters Forum), Cycloniac states that the rosters should be done this month.

3pm edt is the SDS opening day roster update.

Rodon is a good case in terms of ratings. He should not have been a 93 coming into last year and he probably shouldn't be a 77 coming into this year.
