MLB The Show 25 Franchise Mode In-Depth Breakdown

For a lot of folks on OS, the biggest moment of MLB The Show’s pre-release coverage revolves around franchise mode reveals. Y’all love franchise mode, and y’all also hate what’s been done to your favorite son in many sports games — and rightfully so. A lot of these annual games are finally realizing the error of their ways after multiple years of letting these modes rot to some extent, and that’s good, but the issue is the deficits are real. It’s not easy fixing what’s been left to rot. You can’t just paint over where the termites ate away at the foundation and say “all fixed!” I mean, you can, but you’re lying, and you shouldn’t lie (much).

I won't ask for Christmas or birthday gifts if you subscribe to the Operation Sports Newsletter (Not Just Another Roster Update). I write it, and it hits your inbox every Friday morning (for freeeeeee). We also have an official OS Discord you can now join.

Re: MLB The Show 25 Franchise Mode In-Depth Breakdown

"Year-to-year saves and rosters being able to be transferred between versions of The Show hid a lot of foundational issues (and were incredible features we all want back). You could argue that removing those features has not been worth the foundational reworks to this point, and I think you could make that case, but the point is SDS made a choice to stop pretending everything was normal and stripped a lot of stuff from franchise mode in order to start fixing the foundation."

Excellent point and without belaboring the point the much needed additions sometimes flawed. Morale was poorly done and has been removed. Biggest problem with the draft was not enough rounds, not enough players and progression not matching scouted progression. They have apparently changed/fixed scouting this year which is great.

Free agency looks like a fun and engaging new feature but IRL small market teams remain competitive by adding 40 to 50 new players every year via the draft and international signings. Hard to remain competitive with new players via the draft with no international signings so it's a fun and engaging addition but still a bit flawed.

I think the reason we tend to be disappointed is because we as a community wait a full year and have a long list of things we want and the developers only have time to fix a a few broken things and add one new thing. I don't hate the game. I love the game. The only thing I hate is tossing my franchise and starting over from scratch.

That article is a rational explanation from the developers point of view. Programming the game is more difficult than it appears to us amateurs.

I'm going to love that ''recent games tab''.
I'm a numbers nerd and I eat that **** up like hotcakes.
I want to rely on stuff like that more than anything else to determine who starts and who sits, so I wish I could opt out of seeing overall values.

Hidden overalls would so help with immersion but sadly because of DD I can’t see it ever happening.

I've never figured out whether the slump and streak icon next to players name on lineup and rotation screen have an impact on attributes.

I can't claim to know for positive but I always assumed it was cosmetic and didn't influence attributes but was just a simple quick way to show who's hot, who's not.

Great article, A lot of good stuff coming so excited for that

Sad though as you mentioned that these things

Still, when that much of a mode is in a bad place, it means there’s still plenty more to go. The “big three” legacy issues I think we’re still going to have are:
                • Bullpen management issues
                • Lineup issues
                • Regression/progression issues

Are still not fixed. Its been a long time

That's what I've also thought too but I could be wrong.

NHL has it for Fog of War and you can go see the actual overalls in play now mode if you wanted to. It helps with not knowing overall once progression/regression kick in.

I have no proof of this, but it has always seemed to me that when I see that "cold streak" snow icon next to a player, that he's about to have a hot streak.

Fun to see everyone's different thoughts/experience with cold vs. hot.

Personally, I find that when I have a player or multiple guys on cold streaks, there's a lot more weak contact, and if I get a guy hot, they hit bombs.

Could 100% just be in my mind though.

I would love to see hidden potential.

The idea of trading an aging vet for a B potential SS is such a no-brainer. You know how well that player is going to progress without any further research.

Same with draft picks. You get a sense for their career trajectory right after yu sign them.

I'd love to see Madden's approach to draft picks. Potentials are hidden until that player accumulates a certain amount of playing time. If I draft a player with a high OVR and am planning a future around him, turns out he's a D potential under the hood and stop progressing, I really need to call an audible and re-think my long term plan.

Currently, if I draft an A-B potential 3B, I simply wait for him to be MLB ready and call him up. No risk of him being a bust. This makes long-term planning too easy IMO

Same with trading. I don't want to see a potential trade target's potential before I acquire them. I should have to spend some time/points on scouting certain players/teams farm system, find out who's playing well, learn about their attributes gradually and only after acquiring them via trade can I see their potential (or not at all!)

This mode will take a huge leap in my eyes if they go down this route. Currently, it's too easy to project and plan without any real chance of a player not living up to the hype.

It's such a great addition to the game. Fluctuating trade values based on performance throughout the season is also awesome, as well as bad contracts affecting actually affecting value.

Combining the Show's gameplay with the back end of NHL franchise would make for a great mode.

So, if I read the article correctly, there will still be lineup issues and sim stats issues?

Meaning if I play all my games, my pitchers will lead the league in K's and my batters will lead the league in SO's like they did in '24? And the simmed stats for the rest of the league will be an older version of the MLB, all the while my played games are a modern version?

If that's the case, sorry, I can't do it anymore.
