batting stances are purely cosmetic...right?

Or do they have an impact on gameplay?

It would make sense to tie things like ground ball/fly ball ratio to batting stance right? To replicate guys like Ichiro you need to have the ratios down and I do not see any other way the game determines things like that outside of contact vs power.

I think it is cosmetic but the reason I ask is because I have a player with Griffey's stance and his ratings are ~75 contact, ~55 power and it seems like an unusually high percentage of batted balls are long fly balls. It could be my imagination though. Any of the advanced statistics measure fly ball ratio?

It can certainly change how a game feels if you're a RTTS pitcher.

Re: batting stances are purely cosmetic...right?

I'm pretty sure they definitely impact gameplay the same way pitching deliveries do - they alter the timing window just enough to allow for specific variation, like an open stance is going to have a slightly easier time pulling the ball and a tight "inside" stance is going to be quicker than a big ol' hold-the-bat-over-your-head-and-wiggle stance is.

As an aside, unless a stance is 100% spot-on, I'll never hesitate to "fix" a stance as a sort of hitting coach roleplay. If a guy is really struggling, giving him a fresh stance can be an alternative to sending him to the minors.

Stances definitely change how a player 'feels', and I'm almost certain it makes a difference in their hitting areas as well.

I don't feel batting stances alter anything except the size of strike zone (the height) and how close to the plate the batter stands. The closer the batter stands, the easier it is to hit him by pitch or brush him away for a ball.

It makes me wonder if the new batting style (slap hitting) actually does anything in the gameplay.

I sense a mass Ichiro-stance-giving, a 75 game test and a Google Doc in the pipeline.

This is an area where advanced stat tracking would help tremendously. Opinions differ on the matter and if the game tracked such things we would have some kind of quantitative data to provide an answer.

As it is I am not even sure the spray chart updates properly.

Anyway, the play mentioned is my leadoff hitter and I don't need him hitting fly balls everytime I get solid contact.
