Can someone explain how play and club options function? Also what would be the salary for the year the player is kept under an option? Is the year for the option after the contract expires or is it the last year of say a 4 year deal?

Player and club options are options years on a contract that either the team or player agree to. For instance, say you sign a player to a three year deal with a fourth year option (either player or club). After the third year is over, the option is either picked up (club or player) or not making that player a free agent.

Whatever they agree to.

So say I originally sign a player to a 4 year 20mil deal with a club option. When we come to the end of the 4 years, I own the option for the 5th and decide that I want to keep him. We then negotiate for that year? What if we can’t agree on something? Or is it the same salary as the last year of the contract (5mil)?

That fifth-year option salary amount was agreed upon when the contract was signed. For instance, yesterday the Marlins just signed Christian Yelich to a seven-year, $49.5 million deal with a eighth-year team option for $15 million.

Precisely. When you sign a player to a contract with options, the option year salaries are agreed to at that point. You don't assign a salary on option years.

Thanks! I think last question lol. When signing a player, the screen shows number years, salary, and options. And we agree to 4 years with a club option... Is the option year the 4th year of the contract or the year after the contract (year 5)?

The 5th year is the option year.
