Since next week marks the official 10th edition of MLB The Show, let's take a look back at the one that started it all - MLB 06 The Show

I remember clearly seeing a demo of this game in GameStop (or EB games, perhaps) that they had on CD and it blew me away. I had been an Xbox user and loved MVP Baseball, but seized the opportunity and bought The Show. I haven't looked back since.

Some things to notice in the video - the really cool lineup intro around 1:45-2:00 where the Cards are introduced - way cool. This type of thing would look great in today's game with the updated stadium in the background.

The bat sounds - you can hear it when Eckstein gets jammed - bat sounds are great.

I'm a Cardinals fan and I don't remember Larry Bigbie. Turns out he only played in 17 games and only had 28 PA.

At the same time, I must say I'm pretty impressed by the gameplay from that era. My first edition of The Show was 08 on PS3, and you can see a lot of the good bones of the series on display in that video.

Wow. We have certainly came a long way these past 10 years. I took a chance on 06 when it came out because I thought the 2K game sucked that year. I had just decided I'd be without a baseball game for that summer because I couldn't stand playing 2k, when I just randomly ran across The Show at game stop, I had never heard of it. I decided I'd give it a try, and it blew me away. I skipped 07, and have been buying every single year since 08.

No, it makes me realize how amazing MLB 06' TS looks almost 10 years later.

Anyone who played the original MLB 06' back then has to remember the dreaded hit bounce bug. Anytime you hit the ball it looked like it bounced off the field first before taking off like a rocket.

It was this commercial and another with some former pitcher that took up bowling that got me to buy 06 The Show.

I thought that RTTS was going to be some awesome mode like Madden's Superstar Mode, but it was really just the same thing I experienced with MLB 2005. Except this version required a climb through the minors.

I was a little disappointed that MLB 06 The Show was pretty much the same game as MLB 2005 (and probably MLB 2006), but it was still a super fun game.

It was The Show that led me to purchase a PS3...

I had been a die hard modder/player of the MVP series, but I was looking for something more.

Haven't turned back.

Obviously the graphics on the PS2 are inferior. But I am impressed with the pre-game presentation that they used. In fact I think the pre-game presentation of this 10 year old game might be a tad better than the modern pre-game presentation.
