This is more for offline franchise. Vs. users Im convinced that zone is the way to go. Ive felt like a guy bringing a sling shot to a gun fight when Ive played online league games with directional hitting.

Most Realistic Hitting Setting?
I go back and forth between Zone and Directional...never being able to make up my mind..both have their merits..Zone feels closest to simulating bat control IMO. Directional feels good for situational hitting.

Re: Most Realistic Hitting Setting?
I prefer directional as it utilizes the full effect of ratings. It can be more frustrating at times, especially when you are in a cold streak. But overall, it seems to reflect the individual MLB players on your teams actual skill IMO

Re: Most Realistic Hitting Setting?
These days I mostly use Zone, I think it really depends on what kind of realism you want out of your game.
Zone is fun because you have full control of PCI placement and hence the strategic element of hitting (where to look for your pitch, etc.). If you consider being able to have control over your at-bat as realism, Zone is as good as it can get. This is the interface if you want realism in reflecting your skills on how the game plays. As such it is great for RTTS, player-lock franchise, and vs. Human plays where you want your skills to yield more influence.
Timing/Directional/Pure Analog is good if you want player attribute ratings, instead of your skills, to have greater influence in distinguishing in-game player skill gap. By limiting the user control to swing timing, the interface helps less-skilled gamer to play on par and limit highly-skilled gamer to not over-perform. As such it is good for Season/franchise mode where you are in control of variety of players.
But Zone is just fine for season/franchise too, unless you are not very good at using the interface. It's just that if you are not good enough with Zone, your tendencies carry over and influence all players systematically, and you might not get realistic stats in the end.Comment

Re: Most Realistic Hitting Setting?
With directional you have to learn to go with pitches, if it's away wait back and try to swing a little late. Usually on those mid to outside pitches you want good timing. Pitches inside you want to be out in front a little bit so make sure you have early timing. Using the analog sticks isn't always necessary but it helps for home runs. When trying to go away, push the stick to the left or right slightly depending on what side of the plate you're batting from. Use the analog stick only when you feel necessary or when you're trying for a home run on meat fastball. Over using it will result in more outs.Comment
