Can this be turned on or off mid-season? ( at work - for some reason they disapprove playing the game while working - losers!)

Yes..it's gameplay option.

I played 14 with variable but on 15 I turned it off to get perfect calls. I see no difference. Umps still call strikes balls and I'm talking ones where the whole ball is in the zone not the corner pitches.

I saw that too in MLB15 - was odd.

It's different in MLB16. No more rand...I mean 'personalized' strikes.
