Timed hitting

How do you select timed hitting to use in games? Is it by selecting directional hitting but using buttons to swing and not moving the aiming stick?

That's right. PCI is determined by the AI in directional, so your left input only only influences which direction you want to hit the ball (but doesn't guarantee it). If you swing middle in directional, you're playing timing hitting.
