Why do baseball infielders often look at the ball after a play?

Like a guy that catches a line drive will look at the ball, then throw it around...

Or a first baseman after catching a throw for the third out will look at the ball closely on the way back to the dugout...

Why?

Usually just for cuts or scuffs.

Just like when a batter fouls one directly down and it stays around the catcher who picks it up and hands it to the ump who takes it out of play.

Because sometimes people put stuff on it like pine tar because they are cheaters. So its important to check the ball all the time to make sure no shenanigans are going on.
